Update from Dr. Diane Frost, Superintendent of CISD

    Student Learning Options for 2020-2021

We know that everyone is anxiously awaiting the beginning of school in the fall. As of today, CISD is still planning to follow the calendar adopted last spring with a start date of August 13th. If we receive further guidance from the State, we will send out that information. The main purpose for this communication is to let you know that CISD will be providing three different learning options for the 2020-2021 school year. The options that are available to each grade level were established by the Texas Education Agency.

    1. In-Person Learning on campus in a traditional classroom setting (Grades Pre-K through 12) with enhanced, thorough safety and health procedures
    2. At-Home Learning that is scheduled and fully guided by a CISD teacher (Grades 3-12)
    3. Virtual Self-Paced learning that occurs each day, but on a schedule set by parents and/or students; CISD teachers will be available for support at scheduled times (Grades Pre-K through 12)

A detailed “Return to School Framework” describing District protocols for health and safety as well as these three instructional options will be discussed by the Board at its meeting on July 13th. The Framework will be posted on the web site and distributed following the meeting.

Please look for a parent Learning Option Selection Form that will be emailed to parents and posted on the web site on July 20th. The Commissioner has asked Districts to delay until the two weeks before school starts before asking parents to make a final commitment; however, you may begin making this selection on July 20th. This window will allow parents to gather the information that you need from District publications, the information that will be published on the web site to include the Q&A, and/or to contact campuses for answers to questions that you might have.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When will school start for Corsicana ISD?

CISD is slated to begin Aug. 13, 2020. As we await further direction from the state, it is possible this date could be pushed back depending on several factors including: the safety requirements mandated for schools to provide time for acquisition and implementation; and the current COVID-19 infection and transmission rate in Texas and our community.

I received an email about making an instructional choice for my student(s), but I did not respond. Is it too late?

We will provide another opportunity for parents to choose the best method of instruction for their student in the near future. A link will be provided on the CISD website as well as emailed to all parents. The intent of this survey was to gauge the number of parents who might select face-to-face versus on-line instruction. We needed this information to make preliminary staffing decisions. A final decision by parents will be requested about two weeks prior to the beginning of school.

If I select one option for my student and want to switch later in the year, can I?

Yes. Parents may change the instructional option at the end of each nine week period. Campus administration will consider changes within a nine-week period should a significant event, such as a family member being diagnosed with COVID-19, occur.

How will extra-curricular programs, fine arts and athletics work next year?

Safety guidelines have been developed for conducting all on-campus workouts, rehearsals, and practices. The district will continue to follow all guidelines provided by UIL, TEA, and the state.

Will the state ‘shut down’ schools for COVID-19?

At this time, TEA has indicated that they will not require school districts to shut down for COVID-19 for the 2020-2021 year.

In the case of a school closure, students will remain at home and will engage in virtual learning activities through online courses. Students will be required to log onto all courses for attendance and submitting work.

Will students and staff be required to take a COVID-19 test prior to returning?

Based on consultations from local and state officials, schools may not require COVID-19 testing. For students or staff who test positive, a medical clearance from their doctor will be required to return to school.

Will all students need to enroll for the 2020-2021 school year?

Yes. Please complete the enrollment selection for each of your students found on the district website, cisd.org. Enrollment packets will also need to be completed for each CISD student.

    When will teachers receive information?

Teachers and staff will receive the draft of the 2020 CISD School Opening Framework in order to receive feedback and input before posting further information to our parents and community.

How will teachers be scheduled for virtual and in-person instruction?

The scheduling of teachers for virtual or on-line for teachers will be based on student enrollment as well as the type of class. Some classes cannot be taught virtually. Teachers will be provided an opportunity to communicate their preferences, and they will be matched with classes and classrooms to the extent possible. Some teachers may need to teach both face-to-face and virtually. All teachers will be teaching from a classroom on their assigned campus.

    Which campuses have drive-up Wifi?

Students may utilize the drive-up Wifi at any of the following campuses: Fannin Elementary, Carroll Elementary, Navarro Elementary, Collins Intermediate and Corsicana High School.
