Murdock Hired as New Principal for Carroll Elementary
The Corsicana ISD Board of Trustees approved Cheryl Murdock as the new principal at Carroll Elementary School. Murdock has been in education for 18 years, with the last three years serving as an assistant principal at John’s Elementary in Arlington, Texas. Stephanie Howell, the recent Carroll Principal, was promoted to lead the reorganized Collins Intermediate School for 5th and 6th grades to open this Fall 2017.
Murdock exhibits a genuine passion for education. “I believe in students, and I believe in student achievement,” said Murdock. “I visited Corsicana, saw the school and met people who are from Corsicana. I was motivated by the enthusiasm for the city as well as the educational system.”
As a young girl in second grade, attending an elementary school in Michigan, she remembers writing about wanting to become a teacher. “As a child, those who knew of my low soci-economic background reminded me how tough the journey would be, but that I could do anything that I planned to work hard for.”
Perhaps this drive is what motivated Murdock to join the US Air Force at the age of 18. “I wanted to travel and have my college paid for, but I discovered so much more. I am so thankful for my military career.”
Teamwork and collaboration are important part of Murdock’s leadership strategy. “It is my hope that others in the community will see the greatness happening at Carroll and will want to be a part of that vision,” said Murdock.
Murdock’s ‘never stop learning’ mentality is her passion that she works hard to instill in others. Her education includes Officer Leadership School at Luke Air Force Base; a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education from Henderson State University in 1999; and a Master’s degree in Education from Texas Wesleyan in 2009.
Murdock’s experience in the classroom has been in districts such as Duncanville, Mansfield and Arlington ISD at the elementary and intermediate levels. In addition to several recognitions as Teacher of the Month, Murdock was the 2005 Teacher of the Year at Thorton Elementary in Arlington.
“Corsicana ISD is proud to have Cheryl Murdock as the new principal for Carroll Elementary School. Mrs. Howell has done an exceptional job at Carroll for the last two years. I have no doubt that Mrs. Murdock will be an excellent leader,” said, Dr. Diane Frost, superintendent of Corsicana ISD. “I am also proud of the teachers and staff at Carroll who have made this campus an attractive opportunity for someone of Mrs. Murdock’s caliber.”
Murdock is married to, Marchie, who has also been in education for the last 18 years. Together they have three children and two grandchildren. Their oldest is daughter, Lachelle, lives in South Carolina with her two children, Amira and Javier. Marchie, Jr. is a graduate of the University of Illinois and is pursuing graduate studies at Iowa State University, he is also a wide-receiver on the Cyclones football team. The youngest, Malaysia, will be a junior this coming year at Mansfield ISD.
