CHS, Collins Intermediate students have cards selected for holiday contest
Renata Molina may be just a fifth grader, but a future in art may already be in the cards. For the second year in a row, her creativity stood out amongst K-6 entries in the Corsicana ISD Holiday Card contest. Evelyn Aviles, a 9th grader, claimed the mantle amongst upperclassmen.
The annual contest is open to students throughout the district, and winners’ works are the actual artwork used for official CISD holiday cards. After all of the entries are whittled to a list of about 10 finalists, the tapping of an overall winner is made by Superintendent Stephanie Howell.
This year’s winners had common themes for the contest – snow globes, and of course, tigers.
Corsicana High School’s Aviles offered up an exquisite drawing that includes a tiger that appears to be moving on from adolescence and into young adulthood, adorned with a Santa hat replete with the Corsicana “C.” The tiger sits in front of a grouping of fir trees, and is flanked by gifts of all shapes and sizes, including one with paw prints on the outside.
A common element found its way to Molina’s repeat winner, and that is a rendering of her campus front. Last year, she depicted Bowie Elementary with a playground covered in snow, and students building a snowman.
This year, her new school – Collins Intermediate, sits nestled in a slow globe, perched in the hands of a red-gloved helper. It includes a star-topped Christmas tree and “Go Tigers” along the bottom of the drawing.
Both Aviles and Molina will be honored at the Dec. 8 CISD Board of Trustees Meeting.

Renata Molina apenas cursa quinto grado, pero su futuro en el arte ya se vislumbra prometedor. Por segundo año consecutivo, su creatividad destacó entre los trabajos de kínder a sexto grado en el concurso de tarjetas navideñas del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Corsicana (CISD). Evelyn Aviles, alumna de noveno grado, reclamó el manto entre los estudiantes de los grados superiores.
El concurso anual está abierto a estudiantes de todo el distrito, y las obras ganadoras son las que se utilizan para las tarjetas navideñas oficiales de CISD. Tras seleccionar a los diez finalistas, la superintendente Stephanie Howell elige al ganador absoluto.
Los ganadores de este año compartieron temas comunes: esferas de nieve y, por supuesto, tigres.
Aviles, de la Preparatoria Corsicana, presentó un exquisito dibujo que muestra a un tigre que parece estar pasando de la adolescencia a la joven edad adulta, luciendo un gorro de Papá Noel con la "C" de Corsicana. El tigre se encuentra frente a un grupo de abetos, rodeado de regalos de todas las formas y tamaños, incluyendo uno con huellas de patas.
Un elemento común se repitió en la obra ganadora de Molina: una representación de la fachada de su escuela. El año pasado, representó la Primaria Bowie con un patio de juegos cubierto de nieve y estudiantes construyendo un muñeco de nieve.
Este año, su nueva escuela, la Intermedia Collins, se ubica dentro de una esfera luminosa, sostenida por un ayudante con guantes rojos. Incluye un árbol de Navidad coronado con una estrella y la frase "¡Vamos Tigres!" en la parte inferior del dibujo.
Tanto Aviles como Molina serán homenajeadas en la reunión de la Junta Directiva del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Collins (CISD) del 8 de diciembre.
