CHS girls powerlifting second at regionals, sending 5 to state

Girls powerlifting at Corsicana High School keeps getting stronger. Literally. Led by two-time state medalist Laikahs Kelly and state meet veterans Sheyla Flores and Sara Lopez, the Lady Tigers finished second overall at the weekend’s regional meet and are sending five overall to state. 

At Mount Pleasant, CHS got gold from Kelly and Flores, silvers from the Lopezes, Sara and Roxana, and had six others compete. The state meet is scheduled for March 15 in Edinburg. 

Kelly broke two personal records on her way to winning the 242+ class by a combined 225 pounds – the second largest gap at the meet. Her records came in the squat (545 lbs.) and the bench (335) and she totaled 1,305 pounds across the three events. Angelica Becerrill finished fifth in the class and is also advancing to state. 

Flores won the 114s, followed closely by Roxana Lopez in second. Flores’ 275-pound deadlift was the biggest difference in the 30-pound overall gap. Both are headed to Edinburg. Melanie Garcia finished sixth in the 114s. 

Also advancing to the year’s last meet is repeat participant Sara Lopez, who earned silver in the 165s. 

Additional competitors at the regional meet were Addie Burke (9th in the 123s), Sophia Lara (10th in the 148s), Leslee Jones in the 181s, and Lanaiyah Dotson (8th in the 198s). Felicity Morris made the trip as an alternate.

El levantamiento de pesas femenino en la Preparatoria Corsicana sigue fortaleciéndose. Literalmente. Lideradas por la dos veces medallista estatal Laikahs Kelly y las veteranas de la competencia estatal Sheyla Flores y Sara López, las Lady Tigers terminaron en segundo lugar en la competencia regional del fin de semana y están enviando a cinco en total al estado. 

En Mount Pleasant, CHS obtuvo oro de Kelly y Flores, plata de las López, Sara y Roxana, y otras seis compitieron. La competencia estatal está programada para el 15 de marzo en Edinburg. 

Kelly rompió dos récords personales en su camino a ganar la clase de 242+ por un total de 225 libras, la segunda diferencia más grande en la competencia. Sus récords fueron en sentadilla (545 libras) y press de banca (335) y totalizó 1,305 libras en los tres eventos. Angelica Becerrill terminó quinta en la clase y también está avanzando al estado.
