Faith powers CHS’ Kelly to second state powerlifting title

Corsicana High School senior Laikahs Kelly’s second state powerlifting title in three years is a testament not just to her strength, but to her faith and the support of those around her.
Dominating the recent Class 5A Division II meet with a record-breaking 560-pound squat and 355-pound bench press, Kelly credits her success to her family, coaches, and community.
"The main thing going through my mind is that I can do all things through Christ," said Kelly, a member of Roane Chapel Church. “If He is with me, I know I can get the lift.”
To stay focused during intense competitions, she relies on music, often listening to Christian artist Sondae’s song “Amen” through her headphones.
“When I’m competing, it’s just me versus me,” said, Kelly won won gold in 2023 and was runner-up last year. “I’m always pushing to be better than I was before.”
Her powerlifting journey was inspired by her uncle, Willie Kelly, a former Corsicana powerlifter who also qualified for state competition in the early ‘90s.
“Growing up, my family always asked if I was going to beat his record,” she recalled. “At first, I wasn’t sure, but now I’m just proud to be recognized as one of the strongest girls in the state.”
Balancing her demanding training schedule with academics and a part-time job at Super 1 Foods, Kelly appreciates the flexibility her workplace offers. Kelly attributes much of her confidence to her support system, including her coaches, who surprised her with encouraging letters from teachers and staff before the state meet.
“I took it to heart and decided to win this one for Corsicana,” she said.
From the moment she stepped into the coaching role, Laikahs was the talk of the program, Head Girls’ Powerlifting Coach Claire Johnson said.
“Not only is she an incredible lifter, but she’s also an all-around great kid,” she said. “She balances a job, excels as a student, and has made such a name for herself in our community. She’s the kind of athlete every program wants.”
Johnson said it has been a joy getting to know Laikahs, both as a student-athlete and a young woman.
"Laikahs has the most fun personality, the sweetest heart for people, and truly radiates the joy of the Lord. Her faith drives her, and it’s been a gift to witness,” she said. “She is destined for great things. While we’re sad to see her graduate, we are beyond grateful for the example she has set for the underclassmen. Everybody wants to be like Laikahs.
“She is leaving behind big shoes to fill."
For younger athletes, Kelly offers advice born from experience:
“If you make a mistake, don’t assume you can’t do it,” she said. “That mindset defeats you before you’ve even tried.”
The Lady Tigers finished seventh as a team at the state competition. Other Corsicana competitors included Sheyla Flores (sixth place, 114-pound division), Roxana Lopez (eighth, 114s), Sara Lopez (10th, 165s), and Angelica Becerril (eighth, 242+).

El segundo título estatal de levantamiento de pesas de Laikahs Kelly, estudiante de último año de la Preparatoria Corsicana, en tres años es un testimonio no solo de su fuerza, sino también de su fe y del apoyo de quienes la rodean.
Dominando la reciente competencia de la Clase 5A División II con una sentadilla de 560 libras y un press de banca de 355 libras, Kelly atribuye su éxito a su familia, entrenadores y comunidad.

Combinando su exigente programa de entrenamiento con sus estudios y un trabajo a tiempo parcial en Super 1 Foods, Kelly aprecia la flexibilidad que ofrece su lugar de trabajo. Kelly atribuye gran parte de su confianza a su red de apoyo, incluyendo a sus entrenadores, quienes la sorprendieron con cartas de aliento de profesores y personal antes de la competencia estatal.
“Me lo tomé muy en serio y decidí ganar esta competencia para Corsicana”, dijo.
Desde el momento en que asumió el rol de entrenadora, Laikahs fue la comidilla del programa, dijo Claire Johnson, entrenadora principal de levantamiento de pesas femenino.
“No solo es una levantadora increíble, sino también una chica fantástica en todos los sentidos”, dijo. “Combina su trabajo, destaca como estudiante y se ha forjado un nombre en nuestra comunidad. Es el tipo de atleta que todos los programas desean”.
Johnson comentó que ha sido un placer conocer a Laikahs, tanto como estudiante-atleta como joven.
“Laikahs tiene una personalidad divertidísima, un corazón muy dulce para la gente y realmente irradia la alegría del Señor. Su fe la impulsa, y ha sido un regalo presenciarla”, dijo. Está destinada a grandes cosas. Si bien nos entristece verla graduarse, estamos sumamente agradecidos por el ejemplo que ha dado a las estudiantes de primer año. Todas quieren ser como Laikahs.
Deja un gran legado.
Para las atletas más jóvenes, Kelly ofrece consejos basados en la experiencia:
“Si cometen un error, no asumas que no puedes hacerlo”, dijo. “Esa mentalidad los derrota incluso antes de intentarlo”.
Las Lady Tigers terminaron séptimas como equipo en la competencia estatal. Otras competidoras de Corsicana fueron Sheyla Flores (sexta posición, división de 114 libras), Roxana López (octava, 114 libras), Sara López (décima, 165 libras) y Angélica Becerril (octava, 242 libras o más).
