Almanza focused for one final run in goal for Lady Tigers soccer

Giving up. That would have been an easy thing to do. A ninth grader in a sea of students. A new position in a lifelong sport. Family woes. No one would have blamed Lexus Almanza for throwing in the towel. Hanging up her cleats. Settling for average grades. 

One of four seniors on the Corsicana girls soccer team this season, Lexus is the returning District 15-5A Goalkeeper of the Year. It’s a feat she’s determined to repeat, along with helping her team get back to the postseason. 

She’s a four-year starter after playing as a defender her whole life, starting at 3 because her parents just wanted her to be active, she said. 

“I had never played goalie,” said Lexus, a team captain. “That was really a surprise to everybody because it was just like, ‘Oh, you’re really good at it.’” 

Now, Lexus is a pillar of the program, someone Head Coach Andrew Procell has supreme confidence in. In her career, Lexus has more than 300 saves and 14 shutouts. 

“She’s reliable, composed under pressure, and plays with a calm presence that settles the entire defense,” said Procell, now in his fifth season leading the Lady Tigers. “Her ability to stay focused and make key saves when it matters most separate her.” 

That ninth-grade year, those were words Lexus likely thought she’d never hear about herself. Her family was going through “a lot,” she said, and her grandmother died. She missed more than a month of school to attend her funeral in Mexico. 

Her grades slipped, and her funk lasted through her next year. 

“At the end of my sophomore year, I was like, ‘You have to step it up. If you don’t end up playing soccer, you need a backup option,’” Almanza said, recalling that blunt conversation she had with herself. “I started disciplining myself. ‘If you don’t have A’s at the end of the semester, you don’t get the things you want.’” 

A refocusing, Lexus called it. Grades improved. Her play improved. She became a vocal leader on the pitch. And she wanted accolades reserved for the best. 

Where there is a will, there is a way. 

“When my junior year came, I said, ’You’re getting this (keeper of the year) award. You’re going to focus on your grades,’” she said. “I set those goals for myself.” 

She found her why, and Procell and the soccer program have been benefactors. 

“Lexus is an even-keel, coachable leader,” Procell said. “She takes feedback well, works to improve, and leads by example rather than emotion.  

“She’s dependable, team-first, and someone her teammates trust. She’s been amazing for our program both on and off the field.” 

There remain goals in sight for Lexus, the quarterback – if you will, for the back half of the Lady Tigers defense.  

On a personal level, she wants to repeat as first-team all-district and Keeper of the Year. She wants to be first-team All-Region – she was second last year, and has a desire to play in Texas soccer’s post-season high school all-star game. And she wants to play in college. 

Lexus also wants an extended senior season. 

The Lady Tigers are young, having lost key pieces from a year ago, including a number of key defenders on the backline that gave Lexus an experienced unit in front of her. That has not dampened the spirits of the players, especially that senior keeper who could have easily steered her away from the place she now feels most at home – that patch of turf in front of the goal she goes above and beyond to protect. 

“When we count during stretching, we go from one to playoffs. We don’t go from one to 10,” she said. “We make that goal known, ‘This is where we’re going.’ We want to go to playoffs, and not just the first round. Anybody can go to the first round, but not everybody can make it to the second.”

Rendirse. Eso habría sido lo más fácil. Una estudiante de noveno grado en un mar de estudiantes. Una nueva posición en un deporte que practicaba desde siempre. Problemas familiares. Nadie habría culpado a Lexus Almanza por tirar la toalla. Por colgar los tacos. Por conformarse con notas mediocres.  

Una de las cuatro estudiantes de último año del equipo de fútbol femenino de Corsicana esta temporada, Lexus es la portera del año del Distrito 15-5A. Es una hazaña que está decidida a repetir, además de ayudar a su equipo a regresar a la postemporada. 

Es titular desde hace cuatro años, después de haber jugado como defensa toda su vida, desde los 3 años, porque sus padres solo querían que se mantuviera activa, según cuenta. 

“Nunca había jugado de portera”, dijo Lexus, capitana del equipo. “Fue una verdadera sorpresa para todos porque fue como: ‘Vaya, eres realmente buena en esto’”. 

Ahora, Lexus es un pilar del programa, alguien en quien el entrenador Andrew Procell tiene plena confianza. En su carrera, Lexus acumula más de 300 paradas y 14 partidos sin encajar goles. 

“Es confiable, mantiene la calma bajo presión y juega con una presencia serena que tranquiliza a toda la defensa”, dijo Procell, que ahora cumple su quinta temporada al frente de las Lady Tigers. “Su capacidad para mantenerse concentrada y realizar paradas clave cuando más importa la distingue”. 

En aquel año de noveno grado, esas eran palabras que Lexus probablemente pensó que nunca escucharía sobre sí misma. Su familia estaba pasando por “mucho”, dijo, y su abuela falleció. Faltó a clases durante más de un mes para asistir a su funeral en México. 

Sus notas bajaron y su desánimo duró hasta el año siguiente. 

“Al final de mi segundo año, pensé: ‘Tienes que esforzarte más. Si no terminas jugando fútbol, necesitas una alternativa’”, dijo Almanza, recordando esa conversación sincera que tuvo consigo misma. “Empecé a disciplinarme. ‘Si no sacas sobresalientes al final del semestre, no obtendrás lo que quieres’”. 

Un cambio de enfoque, lo llamó Lexus. Sus notas mejoraron. Su juego mejoró. Se convirtió en una líder con voz en el campo. Y quería los reconocimientos reservados para las mejores. Donde hay voluntad, hay un camino. 

“Cuando llegó mi tercer año de preparatoria, me dije: ‘Vas a ganar este premio (mejor portera del año). Te vas a concentrar en tus calificaciones’”, dijo. “Me fijé esas metas”. 

Encontró su motivación, y Procell y el programa de fútbol se han beneficiado de ello. 

“Lexus es una líder equilibrada y receptiva a las instrucciones”, dijo Procell. “Acepta bien las críticas constructivas, trabaja para mejorar y lidera con el ejemplo, no con las emociones. 

“Es confiable, prioriza al equipo y es alguien en quien sus compañeras confían. Ha sido increíble para nuestro programa, tanto dentro como fuera de la cancha”. 

Lexus aún tiene metas por delante, la líder, por así decirlo, de la defensa de las Lady Tigers. 

A nivel personal, quiere repetir como miembro del primer equipo de la liga y como Mejor Portera del Año. Quiere ser parte del primer equipo de la región (el año pasado fue del segundo equipo) y desea jugar en el partido de estrellas de la postemporada de fútbol de preparatoria de Texas. Y quiere jugar en la universidad. 

Lexus también quiere una temporada de último año exitosa. 

Las Lady Tigers son un equipo joven, tras haber perdido jugadoras clave del año pasado, incluyendo varias defensoras importantes en la zaga que le brindaban a Lexus una defensa experimentada. Sin embargo, esto no ha mermado el ánimo de las jugadoras, especialmente el de la portera, quien, a pesar de las dificultades, se siente completamente a gusto en el lugar donde ahora se siente más cómoda: ese trozo de césped frente a la portería que defiende con todas sus fuerzas. 

“Cuando contamos durante los estiramientos, contamos del uno a los playoffs. No contamos del uno al diez”, dijo. “Dejamos clara esa meta: ‘Aquí es a donde vamos’. Queremos llegar a los playoffs, y no solo a la primera ronda. Cualquiera puede llegar a la primera ronda, pero no cualquiera puede llegar a la segunda”.
