CHS student Hayes named State Thespian Officer

Corsicana High School junior Callahan Hayes has been selected as a Texas State Thespian Officer, a prestigious leadership position that represents the pinnacle of high school theater achievement in the state.
Hayes, who has been involved in theater since third grade, learned of his selection Monday morning after completing a rigorous four-month application process. He was chosen from an initial pool of approximately 512 candidates, with only 12 students selected statewide for the officer position.
"It's all about philanthropy and advocacy for theater in Texas," Hayes said, describing the role's responsibilities.
As a state thespian officer, Hayes will help organize major conventions, including events at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas and the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, which draw thousands of student participants. He will also coordinate leadership days at local high schools to train students in theater production and community engagement.
His duties begin in March and include representing Texas theater students at the State Capitol on National Arts Day, where officers advocate for arts education funding and policy.
The Texas Thespians organization functions as the state's equivalent of FFA or student council for theater students, with one representative selected from each participating high school. Hayes will primarily represent the southern region of Texas through the Corpus Christi convention.
Corsicana High School Theater Coordinator Alisan Heath praised Hayes' independence and dedication throughout the selection process.
"He is a very passionate leader in theater," Heath said. "He also did all of the application process by himself. I really didn't have anything to do with it; he took that initiative."
Heath noted Hayes' consistent commitment to the program extends beyond the stage.
"He is always there, stepping up, helping out any workday," she said. "It's just been cool to see him attempt to be a good example for underclassmen."
Hayes has maintained an active theater career throughout his high school years, most recently playing Gomez Addams in the school's fall production. He cited his freshman year role as Abel Klopper in "Book of Everything" as his favorite performance to date.
Beyond theater, Hayes serves on the high school yearbook staff, participates in the National Honor Society, and volunteers with the Amazing Shake program at Corsicana Middle School. In 2022, he competed in the Amazing Shake national competition in Georgia, placing in the top 25 out of 400 participants, the furthest any Corsicana student has advanced in the program.
Hayes, who began performing in community theater in Edgewood before moving to Corsicana, encouraged students interested in theater to take the leap.
"If you ever want to try something, just go for it," Hayes said. "How someone makes you feel based on how they judge you will never be outweighed by how doing what you want feels."
With another year remaining at Corsicana High School, Hayes will continue to serve as both a state representative and a local mentor for aspiring theater students.

Hayes, quien ha participado en teatro desde tercer grado, se enteró de su selección el lunes por la mañana después de completar un riguroso proceso de solicitud de cuatro meses. "Si alguna vez quieren probar algo, simplemente háganlo", dijo Hayes. "La forma en que alguien los haga sentir por cómo los juzgue nunca será más importante que la satisfacción de hacer lo que realmente desean".
Con un año más por delante en la Escuela Preparatoria Corsicana, Hayes continuará desempeñándose como representante estatal y mentor local para los estudiantes de teatro que aspiran a seguir esta carrera.
