Corsicana High School’s Lloyd twins shine at national track meet

For Corsicana High School seniors Ja'Shaun and Ty'Shaun Lloyd, track goes beyond the sport. It embodies their faith, perseverance, and the support driving their journey.
The twin runners recently faced off against elite high school athletes from across the country at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City. It was the track stars’ first trip to the East Coast, and they did not come home empty-handed.
Ja’Shaun claimed the 60-meter hurdles national title with a nation-leading time of 7.49 seconds, and Ty’Shaun earned a personal best in the 60-meter sprint, finishing seventh overall with a time of 6.81.
The two were lauded on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives Tuesday for their Big Apple feats.
The competition was fierce, with several of the nation's top-ranked runners, including Texas record holder and Georgia signee Braden Williams, pushing the limits in every heat.
“Going into that race, I was nervous,” Ty’Shaun said. “I had to line up against some of the fastest kids in the country, including Braden. But I just told myself to stay composed and focused on what I’ve trained for.”
Ja’Shaun agreed the level of competition at Nike Nationals was unlike anything they have previously experienced.
“The difference in intensity was crazy,” he said. “Last year, only seven people ran under eight seconds in the hurdles final. This year, 14 did. It really showed how high the bar has been raised.”
Beyond the numbers and records, running holds a personal significance for the brothers. Ja' Shaun wears a bandana in every race, a tribute to a close friend who passed away.
“It’s my way of keeping her memory alive,” he said. “Every time I step on the track, I think about her, and it motivates me to push harder.”
Faith also plays a central role in their journey. Ty’Shaun credits his recent athletic improvements to an increased spiritual connection.
“I didn’t realize how much I needed faith in my life until the past year,” he said. “Track is more than just running. It’s about having something to anchor yourself to.”
Ja’Shaun, already deeply spiritual, found strength in his support system.
“I was fast before, but I wasn’t fully locked in,” he said. “Our coaches have been amazing. They always keep us positive, and they remind us that it’s not about what happened in the last race, it’s about what you do next.”
Head boys’ track coach Wayne Braziel, spoke highly of their work ethic and dedication.
“These two have been special since their freshman year,” he said. “They push themselves harder than anyone, and it’s been a privilege to coach them. They’ve made me a better coach, too.”
As they look ahead to their next steps - both recently signed to join the track team at Texas State University - the Lloyd brothers try to remain grounded.
“It’s an honor to represent Corsicana and Texas,” Ja’Shaun said. “When you step onto that track, you’re not just running for yourself. You’re running for everyone who couldn’t be there, everyone who has supported you along the way.”
The Tigers are preparing for upcoming meets on Thursday in Ennis, Saturday, March 22 at Dallas Jesuit, and the Bullard/Williams Relays Thursday, March 27. The latter is their only home meet of the season before the April 1 District 15-5A Meet and the state meet May 1-3 at the University of Texas.

Para Ja'Shaun y Ty'Shaun Lloyd, estudiantes de último año de la Preparatoria Corsicana, el atletismo va más allá del deporte. Representa su fe, perseverancia y el apoyo que impulsa su camino.
Los gemelos corredores se enfrentaron recientemente a atletas de élite de preparatoria de todo el país en el Torneo Nacional Nike Indoor en la ciudad de Nueva York. Fue su primer viaje a la Costa Este para las estrellas del atletismo, y no regresaron con las manos vacías.
Ja'Shaun obtuvo el título nacional de los 60 metros vallas con un tiempo líder a nivel nacional de 7.49 segundos, y Ty'Shaun logró su mejor marca personal en los 60 metros lisos, terminando séptimo en la general con un tiempo de 6.81.
Ambos fueron elogiados el martes en el pleno de la Cámara de Representantes de Texas por sus hazañas en la Gran Manzana.
La competencia fue feroz, con varios de los corredores mejor clasificados del país, incluyendo al poseedor del récord de Texas y firmante de Georgia, Braden Williams, superando los límites en cada serie.
"Al comenzar esa carrera, estaba nervioso", dijo Ty'Shaun. “Tuve que enfrentarme a algunos de los chicos más rápidos del país, incluyendo a Braden. Pero me dije a mí mismo que debía mantener la calma y concentrarme en lo que he entrenado”.
Ja’Shaun coincidió en que el nivel de competencia en los Nike Nationals fue diferente a todo lo que habían experimentado antes.
“La diferencia de intensidad fue increíble”, dijo. “El año pasado, solo siete personas corrieron por debajo de los ocho segundos en la final de vallas. Este año, 14 lo hicieron. Realmente demostró lo alto que se ha puesto el listón”.
Más allá de los números y los récords, correr tiene un significado personal para los hermanos. Ja’Shaun usa un pañuelo en cada carrera, un homenaje a una amiga cercana que falleció.
“Es mi forma de mantener viva su memoria”, dijo. “Cada vez que entro en la pista, pienso en ella y me motiva a esforzarme más”.
La fe también juega un papel fundamental en su camino. Ty’Shaun atribuye sus recientes mejoras atléticas a una mayor conexión espiritual.
“No me di cuenta de cuánto necesitaba la fe en mi vida hasta el año pasado”, dijo. “El atletismo es más que correr. Se trata de tener algo a lo que aferrarse”.
Ja’Shaun, quien ya tenía una profunda espiritualidad, encontró fuerza en su red de apoyo.
“Antes era rápido, pero no estaba completamente concentrado”, dijo. “Nuestros entrenadores han sido increíbles. Siempre nos mantienen positivos y nos recuerdan que no se trata de lo que sucedió en la última carrera, sino de lo que hacemos después”.
El entrenador principal del equipo masculino de atletismo, Wayne Braziel, elogió su ética de trabajo y dedicación.
“Estos dos han sido especiales desde su primer año”, dijo. “Se esfuerzan más que nadie, y ha sido un privilegio entrenarlos. También me han convertido en un mejor entrenador”.
Mientras miran hacia sus próximos pasos —ambos firmaron recientemente para unirse al equipo de atletismo de la Universidad Estatal de Texas—, los hermanos Lloyd intentan mantener los pies en la tierra.
“Es un honor representar a Corsicana y a Texas”, dijo Ja’Shaun. “Cuando sales a la pista, no solo corres por ti mismo. Corres por todos los que no pudieron estar allí, por todos los que te han apoyado en el camino”.
Los Tigres se preparan para las próximas competencias el jueves en Ennis, el sábado 22 de marzo en Dallas Jesuit y los Relevos Bullard/Williams el jueves 27 de marzo. Esta última es su única competencia en casa de la temporada antes de la competencia del Distrito 15-5A el 1 de abril y la competencia estatal del 1 al 3 de mayo en la Universidad de Texas.
