Corsicana Tiger Band headed to Area Competition
The Corsicana High School Tiger Band will load buses Saturday, bound for Pflugerville, carrying not just instruments and props, but a story of rebirth that mirrors their competition show.
The 116-member band performs at 12:45 p.m. at the UIL Area Competition at Pflugerville ISD’s The Pfield, with "On Wings of Cinder," a show blending Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," to tell the mythical tale of death and rebirth.
It marks the band's second consecutive year advancing to area after earning a superior rating, the highest possible, at regionals.
"I used 'Both Sides Now' to interpret what happens before the rebirth, that push and pull in the middle, trying to decide if the firebird will be reborn, or if it'll just fade away," said band director Ricky Hinton, in his 12th year at Corsicana ISD.
The show opens with a color guard depicting an egg cracking open while a soloist embodies the emerging firebird. The music quickly shifts to aggressive percussion as the bird fights death, ultimately turning to ash.
Two soloists in call-and-response represent the struggle between rebirth and oblivion. At the climax, two performers raise phoenix wings, the choice made clear. The horn solo from the opening returns, and the firebird soars again.
Hinton intentionally left tension in the final chord.
"It makes you feel like we could go south again," he said.
Unlike last year's Apollo 13 theme, which audiences struggled to follow, judges immediately grasped this year's concept.
"The second we walk out on the field with this show, the judges know exactly what we're doing," Hinton said.
The path back to Area wasn't easy, as nearly half the band consisted of freshmen.
"The biggest thing I wanted them to do is be able to play confidently," Hinton said. "As we've progressed through this season, the underclassmen are coming into their own.”
The band practices eight hours weekly from July through October.
"Music is an activity that you can never perfect," Hinton said. "You always have to push for perfection, knowing you'll never reach it."
At area competition, five judges evaluate everything from musicianship to marching precision. Composite scoring ranks all bands, with the top 10 advancing to finals. The top four or five at finals earn state competition berths.
A sendoff is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday in the band hall parking lot and along Highway 31.
"The kids deserve to see that support," Hinton said.

El espectáculo comienza con una guardia de color que representa un huevo que se abre mientras un solista encarna al pájaro de fuego emergente. La música cambia rápidamente a una percusión agresiva mientras el pájaro lucha contra la muerte, y finalmente se convierte en cenizas.
Dos solistas en llamada y respuesta representan la lucha entre el renacimiento y el olvido. En el clímax, dos artistas levantan las alas del fénix, dejando clara la elección. Vuelve el solo de trompa del inicio y el pájaro de fuego vuelve a elevarse.
Hinton dejó intencionalmente tensión en el acorde final.
"Te hace sentir como si pudiéramos volver a ir hacia el sur", dijo.
A diferencia del tema del Apolo 13 del año pasado, que el público luchó por seguir, los jueces captaron de inmediato el concepto de este año.
"En el momento en que salimos al campo con este programa, saben exactamente lo que estamos haciendo", dijo Hinton.
El camino de regreso a Area no fue fácil, ya que casi la mitad de la banda estaba formada por estudiantes de primer año.
"Lo más importante que quería que hicieran era que fueran capaces de tocar con confianza ", dijo Hinton. "A medida que avanzamos en esta temporada, los estudiantes de primer año están adquiriendo su propio estilo.
La banda practica ocho horas semanales de julio a octubre.
"La música es una actividad que nunca se puede perfeccionar", dijo Hinton. "Siempre tienes que luchar por la perfección, sabiendo que nunca la alcanzarás".
En la competencia del área, cinco jueces evalúan todo, desde la maestría musical hasta la precisión en la marcha. La puntuación compuesta clasifica a todas las bandas, y las 10 primeras avanzan a la final. Los cuatro o cinco primeros en la final ganan puestos en la competencia estatal.
Una despedida está programada para las 8 a.m. el sábado en el estacionamiento de la sala de bandas y a lo largo de la autopista 31.
"Los niños merecen ver ese apoyo", dijo Hinton.
