Tell us about a teacher: Boyd on Morrison

Submitted by Kelli Boyd

I was born and raised in Corsicana, and although I transferred schools, I want to share a story about a woman who truly shaped the person I am today. Her name is Gillian Morrison. Most people know her as a Corsicana Middle School librarian, media specialist, and yearbook teacher, but to me, she was so much more.
I first met Ms. Morrison in kindergarten. Back then, she was the teacher who made the world feel magical. Her classroom was filled with decorations and an interactive energy that made every day an adventure. I specifically remember the puppets she kept in the far back corner and even the classroom hamster. Everything was perfect until I decided to take matters into my own hands. One of my classmates kept getting up from her seat, which got our whole group in trouble. My solution was to attempt to glue her to her chair. My behavior color went straight to red that day. While I didn't see it then, that moment was one of my first real lessons in accountability.
I carried a bit of a grudge from that red color incident for a long time. When I reached middle school and realized she was my teacher again, I was honestly terrified. However, eighth grade ended up being one of the best years of my life. Ms. Morrison stood by my side and watched me grow up in the most literal sense. She went far beyond her pay grade and her job description to act as a second mother to me. She was the person who helped me navigate boy drama, friendship issues, and struggles at home. Most importantly, she stayed with me through my battles with anxiety. She believed in me even when I had no belief in myself, and she made sure to remind me of my value every single day.
On one of our very last days of eighth grade, she gave me a sign that says grow with the flow. I keep that sign right beside my bed as a daily reminder. It teaches me that it is okay to let go of the things I cannot control as long as I keep moving forward. Ms. Morrison, you are the reason I am who I am today. Thank you for everything, and I love you.
