Tiger football banquet honors 11 awards winners at banquet

Former Tiger Eugene Rogers spearheaded his first Corsicana Tiger Football banquet Thursday and further strengthened his push to restore traditional values and outcomes to the program. He welcomed back former teammates – including keynote speaker Ben Jessie, and he and his staff handed out 11 awards at the Corsicana High School Commons. 

Rogers also paid special tribute to families – both of his players and coaches, presenting the spouses of the latter with roses. The only standing ovation of the night went to his wife, Candra, an assistant principal at Collins Intermediate injured in August while on the job. 

Jessie and Rogers are both 1984 CHS graduates and roomed together while teammates at then-Southwest Texas State University. Jessie spoke of overcoming fear and outlined the steps for the program to “return to dominance,” Rogers’ program motto. He said 2024 was not a failure, just a “set up for the comeback.” 

Subvarsity teams were recognized, and individual awards were announced as follows: 

  • Most Valuable Player – Ja'Marion Lewis 

  • Defensive MVP – Jeremiah Escamilla 

  • Offensive MVP – Israel Cornejo 

  • Special Teams Player of the Year – Giancarlo Zuniga 

  • Defensive Back of the Year – Damone Brown 

  • Wide Receiver of the Year – Pete Doak 

  • Defensive Lineman of the Year – Montray Bush 

  • Offensive Lineman of the Year – Kieven Reese 

  • Jim Acree Tiger Heart Award – Jeremiel Taylor 

  • Wilson Griffin Character Award – Edwin Hogan 

  • Outstanding Scholar – Hector Cervantes

El ex Tigre Eugene Rogers encabezó su primer banquete de fútbol americano de los Tigres de Corsicana el jueves y fortaleció aún más su impulso para restaurar los valores y resultados tradicionales del programa. Dio la bienvenida a sus ex compañeros de equipo, incluido el orador principal Ben Jessie, y él y su personal entregaron 11 premios en la Preparatoria Corsicana. 

Rogers también rindió un homenaje especial a las familias, tanto de sus jugadores como de sus entrenadores, y les entregó rosas a las esposas de estos últimos. La única gran ovación de la noche fue para su esposa, Candra, subdirectora de Collins Intermediate que se lesionó en agosto mientras estaba en el trabajo. 

Jessie y Rogers son graduados de CHS en 1984 y compartieron habitación mientras eran compañeros de equipo en la entonces Southwest Texas State University.
