What’s Your Story? District duo develops students, teachers

When Kassie Rich's family relocated from Arizona to Corsicana nearly two decades ago, she never imagined the move would lead to a mentorship that would help shape over a dozen hometown teachers.
Rich, now a Family and Consumer Science teacher at Corsicana High School, credits fellow educator Shelby Curl with transforming her from student to colleague and mentor in her own right.
"I owe everything to Shelby," Rich said. "She is a fantastic mentor and an even more amazing person. Everything I have accomplished in my career is because of her direction."
Together, Rich and Curl have also transformed the school's Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter into a powerhouse that consistently sends students to national competitions. The program continues to modernize what was once considered "home economics," focusing more on career skills.
Another significant achievement has been the expansion of the “Teaching and Training” program which has produced 13 teachers who now work in the District.
Formerly known as "Ready, Set, Teach," it allows high school students to gain classroom teaching experience and graduate with an educational aide certification, preparing them for immediate employment as paraprofessionals.
The pair said District administrators have been supportive of the program's evolution, providing necessary resources.
"If it's for the kids and if it's going to benefit their learning, they let us do it," Curl said.
Both emphasized the importance of having teachers who are invested in the community they serve.
"They understand Corsicana and they understand our students,” Curl said. “We are not going to be here forever, so it is up to us to develop and prepare the next generation of educators.”
The relationship between Rich and Curl began when Rich's mother, Lori Kirby, started teaching alongside Curl. As Rich progressed through high school and college, she babysat Curl's children, strengthening their bond.
After graduating from Tarleton State University in 2013 with a degree in Family and Consumer Science and a teaching certification, Rich found Curl advocating for her future.
"Shelby immediately reached out to Herbert O'Neil, who was Corsicana High School principal at the time, urging him to hire me," Rich said. "(Now Superintendent) Stephanie Howell interviewed me, and the rest is history. We've been teaching partners ever since."
When Rich joined the District that fall, the Family and Consumer Science department consisted of just two teachers. Today, it boasts five faculty members, including former student Christy Santillan (Diaz), who is now teaching alongside her mentors.

Cuando la familia de Kassie Rich se mudó de Arizona a Corsicana hace casi dos décadas, ella nunca imaginó que la mudanza la llevaría a una mentoría que ayudaría a formar a más de una docena de maestros de su ciudad natal.
Rich, ahora maestra de Ciencias de la Familia y del Consumidor en la Preparatoria Corsicana, le atribuye a su compañera educadora Shelby Curl el haberla transformado de estudiante a colega y mentora por derecho propio.
"Le debo todo a Shelby", dijo Rich. "Es una mentora fantástica y una persona aún más increíble. Todo lo que he logrado en mi carrera se debe a su dirección".
Juntos, Rich y Curl también han transformado el capítulo de Líderes de Familia, Profesionales y Comunitarios de América (FCCLA) de la escuela en una potencia que envía constantemente a los estudiantes a competencias nacionales. El programa continúa modernizando lo que alguna vez se consideró "economía doméstica", centrándose más en las habilidades profesionales.
Otro logro significativo ha sido la expansión del programa de "Enseñanza y Capacitación", que ha producido 13 maestros que ahora trabajan en el Distrito.
Anteriormente conocido como "Ready, Set, Teach", permite a los estudiantes de preparatoria adquirir experiencia en la enseñanza en el aula y graduarse con una certificación de asistente educativo, preparándolos para un empleo inmediato como paraprofesionales.
Ambos dijeron que los administradores del Distrito han apoyado la evolución del programa, proporcionando los recursos necesarios.
"Si es para los niños y si va a beneficiar su aprendizaje, nos dejan hacerlo", dijo Curl.
Ambos enfatizaron la importancia de tener maestros que estén comprometidos con la comunidad a la que sirven.
"Ellos entienden a Corsicana y entienden a nuestros estudiantes", dijo Curl. "No vamos a estar aquí para siempre, por lo que depende de nosotros desarrollar y preparar a la próxima generación de educadores".
La relación entre Rich y Curl comenzó cuando la madre de Rich, Lori Kirby, comenzó a enseñar junto a Curl. A medida que Rich avanzaba en la preparatoria y la universidad, cuidaba a los hijos de Curl, fortaleciendo su vínculo.
Después de graduarse de la Universidad Estatal de Tarleton en 2013 con un título en Ciencias de la Familia y el Consumidor y una certificación docente, Rich encontró a Curl abogando por su futuro.
"Shelby inmediatamente se puso en contacto con Herbert O'Neil, quien era el director de la Preparatoria Corsicana en ese momento, y lo instó a que me contratara", dijo Rich. "(La actual superintendente) Stephanie Howell me entrevistó y el resto es historia. Hemos sido socios docentes desde entonces".
Cuando Rich se unió al Distrito ese otoño, el departamento de Ciencias de la Familia y el Consumidor estaba compuesto por solo dos maestros. Hoy, cuenta con cinco miembros de la facultad, incluida la exalumna Christy Santillan (Díaz), que ahora enseña junto a sus mentores.
