A lot of hard work went into honoring a lot of hard work. And did it ever pay off handsomely.
The adjectives needed to describe the first Academic Signing Day for Corsicana High School seniors would be boundless. The college and military commitment ceremony was exciting, fun, heartwarming, splendid, amazing and most importantly memorable.
And, it was very warranted.
All in all, there were 94 seniors recognized for their college choices during a well-run program at the CHS Gymnasium that went off more like a well-oiled 100th event, not the first. Soon-to-be graduates first got to sign certificates at tables with their future school’s colors and name out front, and then took pictures with dignitaries, including college alumni, in many cases. When all 94 were done with a massive group photo, their parents and families waltzed down to the gym floor for hugs, smiles, photos and refreshments.
“What was important to us is we wanted every senior to get the same opportunity,” said Megan Vadasy, event organizer and CHS teacher. “We didn’t want one school to outshine another, and we were very pleased.”
There were those with a lot of representation, like Navarro College, North Texas, Sam Houston State and Texas. But Paul Quinn, TSTC, Dallas and Hill Colleges, and even Indiana Tech were called, and those seniors destined for those locations lauded.
Four future Marines started the afternoon off, and it ended with a lone business major headed to the University of Houston.
Vadasy and her crew have been prepping for the event for months, trying to reach every senior headed to a college or service branch in an effort to honor the years of study already put in with the CISD, and those still to come. She said she had a stable of steady volunteers, including Amy Johnson, Tish Huddleston, Mashequa Guice, Luz Salazar and the junior class.
Those juniors who worked at the event got a glimpse of what could happen for them next year.
“There are already things in my mind, ‘We can do that better for next year,’” Vadasy said.
More than 90 seniors who enjoyed the first may find that hard to believe.

“Lo importante para nosotros es que queríamos que todos los estudiantes de último año tuvieran la misma oportunidad”, dijo Megan Vadasy, organizadora del evento y maestra de CHS. “No queríamos que una escuela eclipsara a otra, y estábamos muy contentos”.
