Great photographers often envision that perfect shot before they ever start shooting. Thinking and capturing are two different things, but when it happens, it can be magical. Thrilling. Award winning.
Orian Gaston, a Corsicana High School sophomore, knows as well as anyone. Her “perfect shot” was a year in the making, and it will soon hang at our nation's Capital.Gaston sought to capture some magic between sow and cow.
“Then the perfect opportunity came,” said Gaston, who takes photos for the CHS yearbook. “I was at my house, walking one of my show pigs and one of our heifers walked up.”
This was back before the Youth Expo, and Orian had taken the camera home to practice before shooting the next week at the Youth Expo.
“She takes tons of photos,” said Jonathon Dixon, CHS Fine Arts Department Head. “She comes back with a thousand-plus photos every time she goes out. She’s a fantastic photographer.
“I’m looking at her photos, and there are these odd photos that are different from the Youth Expo and I said, ‘Oh, what is this?’”
Gaston had captured her show hog and a Charolais having a meeting, of sorts, almost nose to nose. In the background was an interested party of Charolais.
“Charolais can be mean,” she said. They were definitely checking things out, she said.
“I didn’t realize how good the photo was until we printed it,” Gaston said.
The photo was entered into a Congressional Art Competition, entitled “Deep in the Heart of Texas.” The nationwide contest dates back to 1982. Gaston’s photo was selected and will hang at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. for a year.
Dixon posted the photo and contest outcome on social media. A friend who works at the Capitol commented on it.
“She mentioned she walks by these pictures every day and it raises her spirits,” Dixon said. “It’s really cool that Orian’s picture can maybe have that type of influence on some of the most influential people in our country.”
In addition to the honor, Gaston also won two tickets on Southwest airlines to travel to the Art Challenge reception in June where she and her peers – and their works of art – will be celebrated.

Esto fue antes de la Expo de la Juventud, y Orian se había llevado la cámara a casa para practicar antes de filmar la próxima semana en la Expo de la Juventud.
“Ella toma toneladas de fotos”, dijo Jonathon Dixon, Jefe del Departamento de Bellas Artes de CHS. “Ella regresa con más de mil fotos cada vez que sale. Es una fotógrafa fantástica.
“Estoy mirando sus fotos, y hay estas fotos extrañas que son diferentes de la Expo de la Juventud y dije, ‘Oh, ¿qué es esto?'”
Gaston había capturado a su cerdo de exhibición y a un Charolais teniendo una especie de reunión, casi nariz con nariz. En el fondo había un interesado de Charolais.
“Charolais puede ser malo”, dijo. Definitivamente estaban revisando las cosas, dijo.
“No me di cuenta de lo buena que era la foto hasta que la imprimimos”, dijo Gaston.
La foto se inscribió en un Concurso de Arte del Congreso, titulado "Profundo en el corazón de Texas". El concurso nacional se remonta a 1982. La foto de Gaston fue seleccionada y permanecerá en el edificio del Capitolio de los Estados Unidos en Washington, D.C. durante un año.
Dixon publicó la foto y el resultado del concurso en las redes sociales. Un amigo que trabaja en el Capitolio lo comentó.
“Ella mencionó que pasa por estas fotos todos los días y eso le levanta el ánimo”, dijo Dixon. “Es realmente genial que la imagen de Orian pueda tener ese tipo de influencia en algunas de las personas más influyentes de nuestro país”.
Además del honor, Gaston también ganó dos boletos en Southwest Airlines para viajar a la recepción Art Challenge en junio, donde ella y sus compañeros, y sus obras de arte, serán celebradas.
