Mr. Smith is going to Washington. Again. Kaison Smith is no movie star, but he is only in eighth grade. Give him time.
The sky is the limit for Kaison.
More than 80 years after Jimmy Stewart was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Jefferson Smith in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” Kaison is headed to the nation's capital for Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC), according to a press release from Envision by WorldStrides, which is hosting the camp July 23-28.
“I would love to be an Engineer in the future which is why I am excited about attending this program,” Kaison told Envision. “I feel this program will help me learn how to be a leader in more than one way. So, once I’ve become an adult, I will not only be an Engineer, but be able to help the people in my community grow to love academics and excel in other avenues in life.”
The JrNYLC touts the opportunity it affords students across the country to “explore their interests and experience learning beyond the classroom.”
Kaison attends Corsicana Middle School. He loves science, and credits teacher Daniel Bearden for lighting his fire for it. He played football, won first place individually in a math contest on a team that won first, and earned a Centurion award, given out by campus police officers for citizenship, conduct, patriotism, attendance and great work.
“This year has been a very good year for me,” Kaison said.

“Me encantaría ser ingeniero en el futuro, por eso estoy emocionado de asistir a este programa”, dijo Kaison a Envision. “Siento que este programa me ayudará a aprender cómo ser un líder en más de una forma. Entonces, una vez que sea adulto, no solo seré ingeniero, sino que podré ayudar a las personas de mi comunidad a amar lo académico y sobresalir en otras áreas de la vida”.
JrNYLC promociona la oportunidad que brinda a los estudiantes de todo el país de "explorar sus intereses y experimentar el aprendizaje más allá del aula".
Kaison asiste a la escuela secundaria de Corsicana. Le encanta la ciencia y le da crédito al maestro Daniel Bearden por encender su fuego. Jugó fútbol, ganó el primer lugar individualmente en un concurso de matemáticas en un equipo que ganó primero y obtuvo un premio Centurion, otorgado por los oficiales de policía del campus por ciudadanía, conducta, patriotismo, asistencia y gran trabajo.
“Este año ha sido muy bueno para mí”, dijo Kaison.
