Whether jumping alligators or tiptoeing over a giant snake, students at Navarro Elementary are over the moon about the school’s new sensory hall. Their educators are simply wild about the benefits.
Stretching all the way down the A Hall and “snaking” around to about a third of the Main Hall, graphics layered under clear wax give students things to do other than just walking while in the halls. It helps with learning the basics with letters, numbers, and colors, but also can aid with behavioral and emotional situations.
“We have the most special education students in the district here, and we also have an ELC (Early Learning Center),” Special Education Teacher Wendy Cook said. “This is benefitting a lot of kids.”
That’s because the snakes and alligators and shapes and crayons and various stops are not just earmarked for the school’s special and early learners. They can be universally accepted and useful by all grades.
“It can be used for anything, like calming them down, over stimulation, sensory. Our (Occupational Therapist) can use it, our (Physical Therapist) can use it.
“The majority of kids that will use it are over (in A Hall), but I told the third and fourth grade teachers for things like test anxiety, this is one of the things proven to help with that.”
The different sections of the sensory walk focus on shapes, numbers, colors and the alphabet. There are stops for yoga poses that promote relaxation and stretching. The OTs and PTs use different themes for physical development, like turning your body while jumping. There are even three sections where the walls are used, as kindergarten, first and second grade site words grace them.
New Principal Brittany Mathis was on the job for about two days this summer when she found out about it. She immediately welcomed it.
“When (Cook) told me about it, I said, ‘What do we have to do to get this started!,’” Mathis said. “A week or so after that, it actually came in and we started prepping, the teachers came up with a plan, and the custodians were very, very helpful in helping us get it done.
“The kids love it, it’s beneficial and we can definitely tell a difference.”
The Navarro team needed about three days to fully adhere all of the sensory items to the floors. The project was the result of a Corsican Education Foundation grant Cook submitted last spring. The idea actually hatched last September, and she worked on the grant application for two months before it was even due, tweaking it and refining it and talking to anyone that might have a student benefit from the sensory aids.
Her grant application was approved, the rest is history in the making.
“It is the most amazing thing ever,” Mathis said.

Ya sea saltando caimanes o caminando de puntillas sobre una serpiente gigante, los estudiantes de Navarro Elementary están encantados con el nuevo salón sensorial de la escuela. Sus educadores simplemente están locos por los beneficios.
Extendiéndose por el pasillo A y "serpenteando" alrededor de un tercio del Main Hall, los gráficos superpuestos bajo cera transparente brindan a los estudiantes otras cosas que hacer además de caminar mientras están en los pasillos. Ayuda con el aprendizaje de los conceptos básicos con letras, números y colores, pero también puede ayudar con situaciones emocionales y de comportamiento.
“Aquí tenemos la mayor cantidad de estudiantes de educación especial en el distrito, y también tenemos un ELC (Centro de aprendizaje temprano)”, dijo la maestra de educación especial Wendy Cook. “Esto está beneficiando a muchos niños”.
Esto se debe a que las serpientes, los caimanes, las formas, los colores y las diversas paradas no solo están destinados a los alumnos especiales y de edad temprana de la escuela. Pueden ser universalmente aceptados y útiles para todos los grados.
“Se puede usar para cualquier cosa, como calmarlos, sobre estimulación, sensorial. Nuestro (Terapeuta Ocupacional) puede usarlo, nuestro (Fisioterapeuta) puede usarlo.
“La mayoría de los niños que lo usarán han terminado (en A Hall), pero les dije a los maestros de tercer y cuarto grado que, por cosas como la ansiedad ante los exámenes, esta es una de las cosas que se ha demostrado que ayuda con eso”.
Las diferentes secciones de la caminata sensorial se enfocan en formas, números, colores y el alfabeto. Hay paradas para posturas de yoga que promueven la relajación y el estiramiento. Los OT y PT utilizan diferentes temas para el desarrollo físico, como girar el cuerpo mientras se salta. Incluso hay tres secciones donde se usan las paredes, como las palabras del sitio de jardín de infantes, primer y segundo grado las adornan.
La nueva directora Brittany Mathis estuvo en el trabajo durante aproximadamente dos días este verano cuando se enteró. Inmediatamente le dio la bienvenida.
“Cuando (Cook) me lo contó, dije: '¿Qué tenemos que hacer para que esto comience?'”, dijo Mathis. “Más o menos una semana después de eso, en realidad llegó y comenzamos a prepararnos, los maestros idearon un plan y los consejeras fueron muy, muy útiles para ayudarnos a hacerlo.
“A los niños les encanta, es beneficioso y definitivamente podemos notar la diferencia”.
El equipo de Navarro necesitó alrededor de tres días para adherir por completo todos los elementos sensoriales a los pisos. El proyecto fue el resultado de una subvención de la Fundación de Educación de Córcega que Cook presentó la primavera pasada. De hecho, la idea surgió en septiembre pasado, y ella trabajó en la solicitud de subvención durante dos meses antes de que venciera, ajustándola, refinándola y hablando con cualquier persona que pudiera beneficiar a un estudiante con las ayudas sensoriales.
Su solicitud de subvención fue aprobada, el resto es historia en desarrollo.
“Es la cosa más asombrosa que jamás haya existido”, dijo Mathis.
