School student councils tend to look different each year. You might call the changes at Corsicana High School more of an extreme makeover. The changes are plentiful, innovative, and by all accounts very welcomed.
Tradition is out the window as new Student Council Advisor Briana White takes over from longtime sponsor Jonathon Dixon. Gone are cabinet level roles at each class, and in are one set for the whole school: president, vice president, secretary and treasurer – in addition to new executive level roles of Spirit/Culture Chair, Recruitment Chair, PR Chair and Service Chair. Additionally, each club, sport or organization can have two representatives – one upper classman, one lower.
“We’re trying to make it to where student council is not a popularity contest,” said White, a CHS graduate in her seventh year of teaching U.S. History with CISD. She praised Dixon and said she wants to build on what he started with new tweaks.
“We want to look for those kids that are the bridge kids, the ones that are friends with the AP kids and the kids that are (not),” she said. “We want it to be inclusive and build a culture. That’s our main goal, and to teach these kids that they can change things.”
More than 100 combined students attended the two meetings held recently. Several chipped in for a recent face-painting fundraiser held during all three lunches. Officer applications are being taken this week, and the election is Sept. 15.
In the past, the student council has headed up things like homecoming and blood drives. This next body of officers should produce an eclectic mix of events and initiatives.
“This is something good that Dixon did, we try to let the kids run it. We want them to run it,” she said. “We want them to try to figure out what they want to do. And they want to do a bunch of things.”
To come up with the new structure, White said she spoke to numerous teachers and staff, studied other organizations on campus, and tried to incorporate the best of all of them.
Namely, inclusion.
“She had a vision for what she thought it should be, and it fit perfectly in line with my vision of ‘Live as One,’” CHS Principal Scott Doring said. “What it does is it brings all of the student organizations together. They are going to meet with me and the principals and they are going to have a big say in the things we do for fun and the things we do at the school to promote culture. We’re trying to promote a good culture where the students can have fun and they want to come to school, so it is perfect.”
With homecoming and a blood drive coming up Sept. 27, the new student council will have to hit the ground running. She also wants the student council to head up Teacher Appreciation Week on campus, and rally students during midterms and finals.
More than that, she thinks an innovative approach could pay larger dividends down the road.
“If we look at all of the problems we’ve had since COVID, if we use student council like the way we are trying to use it, in return we can fix all of those issues,” White said. “We will fix the attendance. We will fix the behavior. We will fix the fact that right now kids don’t really care about school at this point. It’s normal for high schoolers to not care about school. But after COVID, they literally did not see the importance of an education anymore. We’re hoping to bring that back.”

La tradición está fuera de la ventana cuando la nueva patrocinadora del Consejo Estudiantil, Briana White, reemplaza al patrocinador de mucho tiempo, Jonathon Dixon. Ya no están los roles de nivel de gabinete en cada clase, y hay un conjunto para toda la escuela: presidente, vicepresidente, secretario y tesorero, además de los nuevos roles de nivel ejecutivo de Presidente de Espíritu/Cultura, Presidente de Reclutamiento, Presidente de Relaciones Públicas y Presidente de Servicio. Además, cada club, deporte u organización puede tener dos representantes: uno superior y otro inferior.
“Estamos tratando de llegar a donde el consejo estudiantil no sea un concurso de popularidad”, dijo White, una graduada de CHS en su séptimo año de enseñanza de Historia de EE. UU. con CISD. Elogió a Dixon y dijo que quiere construir sobre lo que comenzó con nuevos ajustes.
“Queremos buscar a esos niños que son los niños puente, los que son amigos de los niños AP y los niños que (no lo son)”, dijo. “Queremos que sea inclusivo y construya una cultura. Ese es nuestro objetivo principal y enseñar a estos niños que pueden cambiar las cosas”.
Más de 100 estudiantes combinados asistieron a las dos reuniones celebradas recientemente. Varios contribuyeron para una reciente recaudación de fondos de pintura de caras que se llevó a cabo durante los tres almuerzos. Las solicitudes de oficiales se están tomando esta semana y la elección es el 15 de septiembre.
En el pasado, el consejo estudiantil encabezó cosas como el regreso a casa y las campañas de donación de sangre. Este próximo cuerpo de oficiales debería producir una mezcla ecléctica de eventos e iniciativas.
“Esto es algo bueno que hizo Dixon, tratamos de dejar que los niños lo dirijan. Queremos que lo manejen”, dijo. “Queremos que traten de averiguar qué es lo que quieren hacer. Y quieren hacer un montón de cosas”.
Para idear la nueva estructura, White dijo que habló con numerosos maestros y personal, estudió otras organizaciones en el campus y trató de incorporar lo mejor de todas ellas.
Es decir, la inclusión.
“Ella tenía una visión de lo que pensaba que debería ser, y encajaba perfectamente con mi visión de ‘Live as One’”, dijo el director de CHS, Scott Doring. “Lo que hace es unir a todas las organizaciones estudiantiles. Se reunirán conmigo y los directores y tendrán una gran influencia en las cosas que hacemos para divertirnos y las cosas que hacemos en la escuela para promover la cultura. Con el regreso a casa y una campaña de donación de sangre el 27 de septiembre, el nuevo consejo estudiantil tendrá que ponerse en marcha. Ella también quiere que el consejo estudiantil encabece la Semana de Agradecimiento a los Maestros en el campus y reúna a los estudiantes durante los exámenes parciales y finales.
Más que eso, ella cree que un enfoque innovador podría generar mayores dividendos en el futuro.
“Si observamos todos los problemas que hemos tenido desde COVID, si usamos el consejo estudiantil de la forma en que lo estamos tratando de usar, a cambio podemos solucionar todos esos problemas”, dijo White. “Arreglaremos la asistencia. Arreglaremos el comportamiento. Arreglaremos el hecho de que en este momento a los niños realmente no les importa la escuela en este momento. Es normal que los estudiantes de secundaria no se preocupen por la escuela. Pero después de COVID, literalmente ya no vieron la importancia de una educación. Esperamos traer eso de vuelta”.
