Amber Hooks, Volleyball Coach

A young coach coupled with inexperienced players often means road bumps early on. But for Amber Hooks and her Lady Tigers varsity volleyball team, smoother roads ahead may already be in focus.
“We’re obviously rebuilding but I think the girls are starting to buy in and work really hard for me,’ said Hooks, who graduated from Tarleton State University in December. “We're trying to change the culture.”
The Lady Tigers open District 14-5A play on the road Friday at Ennis. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
After a shaky start, the Lady Tigers have some positive vibes going.
“We have a winning streak at home. Two,” Hooks said with a smile. “Hopefully we can build on that going into district.”
This year’s team returned only four players, two with extensive varsity experience, Hooks said. Three freshmen, two sophomores and three juniors join four seniors on the roster.
And then there is Hooks, who joined the Corsicana ISD just days before the season started.
“The very first day of two-a-days is when I met the girls,” she said.
Hooks was barely a Hooks then. A decorated volleyball player at Tarleton, she married Wesley Hooks June 25 of this past summer and both had new jobs at other school districts until a sudden shift occurred. The former Amber Strange and her new husband both joined the CISD, Wesley as a football assistant.
“I am so thankful for the opportunity, and I am super happy Wesley and I are at the same place,” she said. “It all fell into place like it should.”
For the season, the Lady Tigers have three total wins against losses in the double digits. You could not tell that from watching a practice or a scrimmage. Enthusiasm abounds on the court.
“I’m very positive about it,” Hook said. “We started out rocky, but things are going better. They're actually learning what it’s like to fight and leave it out on the court. I think they are pumped for district, and I think we could go to the playoffs if they truly work hard. But they have to show up every night.”

Un entrenador joven junto con jugadores con poca experiencia significa baches en el camino. Pero para Amber Hooks y su equipo de voleibol Lady Tigers, es posible que los caminos más tranquilos por delante ya estén en el punto de mira.
“Obviamente estamos reconstruyendo, pero creo que las chicas están empezando a aceptar y trabajar muy duro para mí”, dijo Hooks, quien se graduó de la Universidad Estatal de Tarleton en diciembre. “Estamos tratando de cambiar la cultura”.

El equipo de este año regresó solo con cuatro jugadores, dos con amplia experiencia universitaria, dijo Hooks. Tres estudiantes de primer año, dos de segundo año y tres de tercer año se unen a cuatro estudiantes de último año en la lista.
Y luego está Hooks, quien se unió a Corsicana ISD solo unos días antes de que comenzara la temporada.
“El primer día de dos días fue cuando conocí a las chicas”, dijo.
Hooks era apenas un Hooks entonces. Una jugadora de voleibol condecorada en Tarleton, se casó con Wesley Hooks el 25 de junio del verano pasado y ambos tenían nuevos trabajos en otros distritos escolares hasta que ocurrió un cambio repentino. La ex Amber Strange y su nuevo esposo se unieron al CISD, Wesley como asistente de fútbol.
“Estoy muy agradecida por la oportunidad, y estoy muy feliz de que Wesley y yo estemos en el mismo lugar”, dijo. “Todo encajó como debería”.
Para la temporada, las Lady Tigers tienen tres victorias totales contra derrotas de dos dígitos. No podrías decir eso viendo una práctica o un partido de práctica. El entusiasmo abunda en la cancha.
“Soy muy positivo al respecto”, dijo Hook. “Empezamos mal, pero las cosas van mejor. De hecho, están aprendiendo lo que es pelear y dejarlo en la cancha. Creo que están entusiasmados con el distrito, y creo que podríamos llegar a los playoffs si realmente trabajan duro. Pero tienen que aparecer todas las noches”.
