Navarro Elementary School’s new office spotlight board already has its first honoree: Life Skills Team Lead Tiffany Gillen. Always willing to go above and beyond for the entire school, the choice was easy, her colleagues said.
For Gillen, it’s a labor of love, an extension of a role she has had in her own home for more than a decade.
“It’s my life. It’s all I have been doing for 14 years, almost,” Gillen said. “I know I have the patience for it, and I know I have the love for it.”
Gillen delivered triplets in 2008. At six days, a son passed away. That left her with twins, one of whom is autistic and non-verbal.
“Knowing the impact that I’ve had with him the last 14 years, that experience and that passion to want to help him, I kind of have a knack for it,” she said. “I know what I am doing, so I wanted to come over to Life Skills to put that passion and that drive to help other kids as well.”
This is Gillen’s fifth year in Corsicana ISD, following stints in her hometown district of Blooming Grove, and with neighboring Frost ISD. After three years as a third-grade teacher at Bowie Elementary in CISD, a Life Skills position finally opened up at Navarro.
That’s where her heart wanted to be.
After one year, she was made the team lead, and she oversees seven teachers and 12 paraprofessionals. She has four brand new teachers, one brand new to special education, and one that came out of retirement to help.
“I can’t do this alone,” she said of the lead role. “The rest of the team, Ms. (Kimberly) Day and Ms. (Wendy) Cook, have really stepped up.”

La primera persona honrada por su arduo trabajo en la Escuela Primaria Navarro fue homenajeada: la líder del equipo de habilidades para la vida, Tiffany Gillen. Siempre dispuesta a ir más allá por toda la escuela, la elección fue fácil, dijeron sus colegas.
Para Gillen, es una labor de amor, una extensión de un papel que ha tenido en su propia casa durante más de una década.
"Es mi vida. Es todo lo que he estado haciendo durante 14 años, casi”, dijo Gillen. “Sé que tengo paciencia para ello, y sé que tengo amor por ello”.
Gillen dio a luz trillizos en 2008. A los seis días, falleció un hijo. Eso la dejó con gemelos, uno de los cuales es autista y no verbal.
“Sabiendo el impacto que he tenido con él durante los últimos 14 años, esa experiencia y esa pasión por querer ayudarlo, tengo un don para eso”, dijo. “Sé lo que estoy haciendo, así que quería venir a Life Skills para poner esa pasión y ese impulso para ayudar a otros niños también”.
Este es el quinto año de Gillen en Corsicana ISD, luego de períodos en el distrito de su ciudad natal de Blooming Grove, y con el vecino Frost ISD. Después de tres años como maestra de tercer grado en Bowie Elementary en CISD, finalmente se abrió una posición de habilidades para la vida en Navarro.
Ahí es donde su corazón quería estar.
Después de un año, se convirtió en líder del equipo y supervisa a siete maestros y 12 paraprofesionales. Tiene cuatro maestros nuevos, uno nuevo en educación especial y uno que salió de su retiro para ayudar.
“No puedo hacer esto sola”, dijo sobre el papel principal. “El resto del equipo, la Sra. (Kimberly) Day y la Sra. (Wendy) Cook, realmente se han esforzado”.
