The last time the Corsicana Tigers made the playoffs in boys basketball, this year’s team was in middle school and some even in elementary. There are no returning starters. No 6-5 posts. It will take teamwork, effort, and positivity for the Tigers to improve on last year’s improvement.
The Tigers were 2-27 two seasons ago but went 10-21 in Coach Sunny Hardy’s first season as head coach last year. Another eight-win improvement would get them over .500.
“In the past 12 months we have been working very hard to change the culture of Corsicana basketball,” said Hardy, who is 161-120 overall in his career. “We hold our players to very high standards both on the court and off of it. My expectation for this year is that we put our culture over everything and we teach our players responsibility and sportsmanship.”
That foundation can set the table for the court, and that was evident Saturday in the final tune-up before the season opener Tuesday at Benbrook. The Tigers outscored Mabank in four live quarters, 57-38. All 15 players suited up scored, led by Derrick Nathan, who had eight points and eight rebounds.
Overall, the team only has two returners, seniors Damarion Kelly and Vonte Kelly. Sophomore guard Kameron Mize is one of the top newcomers.
“On the court, we have very little varsity experience,” Hardy said. “We will struggle against 5A schools because of that and our lack of size. I believe we can compete for fourth place in the district if we continue to get better defensively.”
