If you ever drive by Corsicana Middle School and see students on two wheels who look like they are having fun outside, it’s because they are. A new program has students pedaling away.
David Richardson is the Outdoor Education instructor at CMS, and he does not just think “outside the box.” He takes it “outside the school walls.”
“The goal for outdoor education is to provide students with the opportunity to explore various outdoor activities which they may or may not have experienced,” Richardson said.
A grant he received from the organization Outride allows his students to strap on safety helmets, settle onto mountain bikes, and cruise around the campus with classmates.
“After navigating the application process, we were notified that Corsicana Middle School was the only school in Texas selected to receive this grant,” he said.
On its website, Outride touts its program as one that allows students who face daily battles with things like anxiety, isolation, and obesity and chance to get outside, get engaged, and stay active and focused.
“The majority of students enjoy riding as it allows them a brief escape from the typical school day, as not all classrooms have four walls,” Richardson said.

David Richardson es el instructor de Educación al Aire Libre en CMS, y no solo piensa "fuera de la caja". Lo lleva “fuera de los muros de la escuela”.
“El objetivo de la educación al aire libre es brindarles a los estudiantes la oportunidad de explorar diversas actividades al aire libre que pueden o no haber experimentado”, dijo Richardson.
Una subvención que recibió de la organización Outride permite a sus estudiantes ponerse cascos de seguridad, instalarse en bicicletas de montaña y pasear por el campus con sus compañeros de clase.
“Después de navegar el proceso de solicitud, se nos notificó que Corsicana Middle School fue la única escuela en Texas seleccionada para recibir esta subvención”, dijo Richardson.
En su sitio web, Outride promociona su programa como uno que permite a los estudiantes que enfrentan batallas diarias como la ansiedad, el aislamiento y la obesidad la oportunidad de salir, participar y mantenerse activos y concentrados.
“La mayoría de los estudiantes disfrutan andar en bicicleta, ya que les permite una breve escapada del típico día escolar, ya que no todas las aulas tienen cuatro paredes”, dijo Richardson.
