Drawing strength from the scholarship’s namesake, Corsicana High School senior Bryan Zarraga was honored for his first-place finish in the Navarro College Martin Luther King Jr. Day essay contest. Zarraga was one of four recipients who recited their essays during Tuesday’s 10th annual MLK Breakfast at the college.
Zarraga received an MLK Scholarship during the breakfast, which also included a moving performance by the Navarro College Chorale and a keynote address by Charles English, president a CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas.
With his parents in the audience, Zarraga shared a story in his essay from a time when he was younger a new student was harassed by other students because of her looks. While thoughts of violence raced through his head, he admitted guilt in not standing up for his new classmate. He also admitted learning later, through the teachings of Dr. King, that words carry a lot of weight and would have been more beneficial than physical response to that incident.
Zarraga said he hopes to be a scientist someday.

Con la fuerza del mismo nombre de la beca, el estudiante de último año de la Preparatoria de Corsicana, Bryan Zarraga, fue honrado por su primer lugar en el concurso de ensayos del Día de Martin Luther King Jr. Del Colegio Navarro. Zarraga fue uno de los cuatro ganadores que recitaron sus ensayos durante el décimo desayuno anual MLK del martes en el colegio.
Zarraga recibió una beca MLK durante el desayuno, que también incluyó una emotiva presentación de la Coral del Colegio Navarro y un discurso de Charles English, presidente y CEO del Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas.
Con sus padres en la audiencia, Zarraga compartió una historia en su ensayo de cuando era más joven, una estudiante nueva fue acosada por otros estudiantes debido a su apariencia. Mientras los pensamientos de violencia corrían por su cabeza, admitió su culpa por no defender a su nueva compañera de clase. También admitió haber aprendido más tarde, a través de las enseñanzas del Dr. King, que las palabras tienen mucho peso y que habrían sido más beneficiosas que la respuesta física a ese incidente.
Zarraga dijo que espera ser científico algún día.
