On Monday, the Corsicana High School boys golf team welcomes a slew of golfers in for the Tiger Classic. They expect to win it.
The young Tigers have some varsity experience and some impact freshmen that give coach Andy Dotson hope for this spring. And beyond.
“This will be the deepest field at the tournament since we started hosting it three years ago,” said Dotson, in year six as the golf coach of his alma mater. “We are expecting over 100 varsity players. We know Mildred is really good this year, as well as Jacksonville and Cedar Hill.
“It will be a real challenge, but I really like the fact that our guys feel like they can win every time they step on the course.”
The Tigers have four returning lettermen in juniors Logan Gruver and Ethan Blue, and sophomores Gabe Sodd and Wesley Baggett. And already this spring, freshmen Jackson McMath and Jacob McSpadden are having an impact.
At a tournament earlier this week McMath was third medalist with an 84, and Sodd was right behind with an 85.
“This is the youngest group we've had in six years, but top to bottom, probably the most talented bunch we've had,” Dotson said. “We just need to continue to grow and mature.
“We're nine deep, five of which are underclassmen, and most of the guys are capable of getting it in the 70s and 80s.”
Dotson expects his team to battle for a spot in the region tournament out of district. He said it could be a four-team race between senior-led Ennis, Forney, Crandall and his squad.
“In order to be successful, we need four of the five (in a particular tournament) to play well at the same time on the same day. That's a tough job,” Dotson said. “We've been fortunate this year to have some success. We won the Grand Prairie Tournament, finished second at Pinnacle, and have two thirds and a fourth. I think our best golf is still ahead of us. Not only this year but for several years to follow.”

D otson espera que su equipo luche por un puesto en el torneo de la región fuera del distrito. Dijo que podría ser una carrera de cuatro equipos entre Ennis, Forney, Crandall y su equipo.
“Con el fin de tener éxito, necesitamos cuatro de los cinco (en un torneo en particular) para jugar bien al mismo tiempo en el mismo día. Es una tarea difícil", afirmó Dotson. "Este año hemos tenido la suerte de cosechar algunos éxitos. Ganamos el Torneo de Grand Prairie, terminamos segundos en Pinnacle, y tenemos dos terceros y un cuarto. Creo que nuestro mejor golf aún está por llegar. No sólo este año, sino durante varios años más”.
