Scholarship Song a call to action for CHS seniors

Play it, and they will come. Often in droves! What is “it”? The Scholarship Song at Corsicana High School, of course.
Though the frequency has died down as the school year winds down, there were days the scholarship song blared two times a day throughout the PA system. Lead Counselor Patricia Daniels plays it as new scholarship opportunities become available to CHS seniors.
“The song is for them to think, ‘Hey, a scholarship is posted,’” Daniels said.
The idea came to her after remembering hearing lullaby songs played in hospitals after the birth of a baby. The difference is this song is a call to action.
The song in question is 1991’s “For the Love of Money” by Troop and Levert, a remake based on the O’Jays 1973 hit. It features a riff that includes the words “money, money, money.”
“I want them to have that same feeling when I am in the hospital, and I hear that (lullaby),” Daniels said. “I know instantly what that song is.”
It took a few times for it to sink in with students. Now, the impact is greater than normal means of communication, like an email, which can be easy to ignore.
“Now, when I play that song, when that period is over, or if they're not doing anything during the period, there are 15 to 20 kids in my office,” she said. “‘I heard the song. Where’s the scholarship?’”
It gets posted to an online page for students, but she keeps hard copy material in her office as well.
“It's good for our seniors. It’s a reminder,” Principal Scott Doring said. “They have a lot of things going on and when they hear that, it makes them look at the opportunities we have for them. I think it has helped them stay focused on applying for scholarships.”
Some three dozen scholarships have been awarded to seniors who acted after hearing the scholarship song. There could be as many as 15 more still out, Daniels said.
So far, almost $1 million in scholarships have been pledged to the Class of 2023 through this method.
