When Corsicana ISD Chief of Police Scott Stephens said the unit’s fleet needed updating, the wheels in Sgt. Lavon Denson’s head started spinning. Grants were out there, she knew, and her research engine – inside her head - fired up.
She has been a grant machine ever since.
This fall, the district will welcome six new 76-passenger buses to replace outgoing, aged models thanks to Denson.
“I just started researching grants for the district because I knew we were in dire need of buses,” said Denson, a 5-year member of the CISD police department. The Texas Clean School Bus Program popped up, “and I started making phone calls,” she said.
The grant was available on a first come, first served basis. During the week of February, in 2022 when icy weather kept students and staff at home for a few days, Denson was able to jump on a few webinars about the grants, putting her sudden free time to great use for CISD.
She learned at the beginning of this school year CISD had been tabbed for funds. Two grants obtained by Denson totaled $387,450.
“Sgt. Denson’s grant work is above and beyond her call of duty as a member of our police department,” said Dr. Diane Frost, Superintendent of CISD schools. “The initiative she has displayed in seeking out these grants gives the district purchasing power we would not have otherwise. School buses are a needed necessity for any district and her efforts are invaluable.”
In addition to the buses and patrol fleet, she has helped secure grant money for safety and security purposes and new firearms for the unit.
“Once you write one, you want to do more,” Denson said.

Además de los autobuses y la flota de patrullas, ha ayudado a obtener subvenciones para fines de seguridad y nuevas armas de fuego para la unidad.
“Una vez que escribes uno, quieres hacer más”, dijo Denson.
