A special delivery arrived Thursday afternoon at Corsicana ISD in the form of a box truck full of supplies to support students with autism. The items were funded by a grant and will go to meet the needs of autistic students through the Freestone Navarro Bi-County Co-op, which provides specialized services, training, and counsel to school districts in both counties.
The truckload of items included sensory and behavioral toys, puzzles, and games for all ages.
One in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism, according to autismspeaks.org, and students with autism may face challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and non-verbal communication.
Executive Director of Special Programs Margie Crow said Corsicana ISD partnered with Bi-County Co-op and Texas A&M Commerce to apply for the grant over two years ago.
“We have already implemented robust curriculum, but we needed supplies to match,” she said. “These are all the pieces. This entire box truck will be used to supply autistic students to meet behavioral, sensory, classroom or academic needs.”
CISD’s Jennifer Ford and Jennifer Ellis got to go on a shopping spree at Lakeshore Learning in Dallas to pick out and purchase all the necessary items.
“Without these grant funds it would be impossible to provide, not only these supplies, but training which has been instrumental,” said Bill Capers, Executive Director of Special Education Freestone Navarro Bi-County Co-op.

Una entrega especial llegó el jueves por la tarde a Corsicana ISD en forma de un camión lleno de materiales para apoyar a los estudiantes con autismo.
