In the days of vanishing traditional media, a handful of talented Corsicana High School writers and artists have taken an old-school approach to sharing their ideas through the Tigers’ Pen Literary Journal.
Created using a photocopier and a couple of staples, the student-run publication includes short fiction, editorials, plays, poems, and movie reviews. It is custom illustrated by artists, distributed by hand, and promoted by word of mouth. Reminiscent of the do-it-yourself “zines” (short for magazines) of the pre-internet era, the black and white publication curates the cumulative output of the club, currently in its third year.
Corsicana High School senior and Tigers’ Pen Editor-In-Chief Ellysa Crouch recalled the origin of the project.
“My sophomore year, our former English teacher (Colleen Cabaj) told us about a literary journal at her old school and asked if we would be interesting in starting one at CHS,” she said. “I knew there was a lot of talent within the school, so we drew up a recruitment poster, called our friends and created enough content to print our first issue.”
Now published quarterly, the Tigers’ Pen Literary Journal is distributed through club members and stacked in the CHS library, while supplies last.
“The club is a place where creative minds can come together and make an impact through our stories being heard,” Crouch said. “If you want your peers or the world to know something about you or if you have a talent you feel shouldn't be kept to yourself Tigers’ Pen is the place for you.”
High School junior and Tigers’ Pen Associate Editor Kaden Lyles had been writing for years before he discovered the club.
“I wrote some fiction, but it was mostly just taking up space on my Google Drive,” he said. “I also enjoyed reading and discussing stories after class, so the club was a good fit.”
Lyles advises students who have stories to tell but may be intimidated by the technical aspects of writing, to bring their work to the group.
“Even if you are not confident, at some point you just have to put your work out there,” he said. “No one starts out great, but you will get better through peer proofing and constructive criticism. We are incredibly supportive and respectful of each other.”
CHS English teacher and Club Advisor Mahailey Oliver explained that club differs from other extracurriculars and organizations as it is run by the students, for the students.
“There are already a lot of opportunities for students to shine athletically and academically, but the Tigers’ Pen Club adds to that because it gives the creative kids their own place to shine,” she said.
The club meets every other Thursday in room G205 to discuss themes, due dates, and to make decisions. Members must attend at least two meetings every nine weeks to stay active. The next meeting of the Tiger’s Pen is Thursday, Sept. 14 and prospective members are encouraged to attend or email Ms. Oliver at moliver@cisd.org for more information.

En una época en la que los medios de comunicación tradicionales están desapareciendo, un conjunto de talentosos escritores y artistas de la Preparatoria Corsicana han adoptado un enfoque tradicional para compartir sus ideas a través del Tigers' Pen Literary Journal.
Creada con una fotocopiadora y un par de grapas, la publicación dirigida por estudiantes incluye ficción corta, editoriales, obras de teatro, poemas y críticas de películas. Está ilustrada por artistas, se distribuye a mano y se promociona mediante la difusión verbal. Con reminiscencias de las “zines” (abreviatura de revistas) de la era anterior a Internet, la publicación en blanco y negro selecciona la producción acumulada del club, actualmente en su tercer año.
Ellysa Crouch, estudiante de último año de la Preparatoria Corsicana y editora en jefe de Tigers' Pen, recordó el origen del proyecto.
“En mi segundo año, nuestra ex profesora de inglés (Colleen Cabaj) nos habló de una revista literaria en su antigua escuela y nos preguntó si estaríamos interesados en iniciar una en CHS”, dijo. "Sabía que había mucho talento dentro de la escuela, así que elaboramos un cartel de reclutamiento, llamamos a nuestros amigos y creamos suficiente contenido para imprimir nuestra primera edición ".
Ahora publicado trimestralmente, el Tigers' Pen Literary Journal se distribuye entre los miembros del club y se almacena en la biblioteca de CHS, hasta agotar existencias.
"El club es un lugar donde las mentes creativas pueden unirse y generar un impacto a través de nuestras historias", dijo Crouch. "Si quieres que tus compañeros o el mundo sepan algo sobre ti o si tienes un talento que crees que no deberías guardarte para ti, Tigers' Pen es el lugar para ti".
Kaden Lyles, estudiante de tercer año de la preparatoria y editor asociado de Tigers' Pen, había estado escribiendo durante años antes de descubrir el club.
"Escribí algo de ficción, pero en su mayor parte solo ocupaba espacio en mi Google Drive", dijo. “También disfrutaba leer y discutir historias después de clase, por lo que el club era un buen ajuste".
Lyles aconseja a los estudiantes que tienen historias que contar pero pueden sentirse intimidados por los aspectos técnicos de la escritura, que traigan su trabajo al grupo.
“Aunque no estés seguro de ti mismo, en algún momento debes exponer tu trabajo", afirma. “Nadie empieza siendo genial, pero mejorarás mediante las revisiones entre compañeros y la crítica constructiva. Nos apoyamos muchísimo y nos respetamos mutuamente”.
La profesora de inglés de CHS y asesora del club, Mahailey Oliver, explicó que el club difiere de otras extracurriculares y organizaciones ya que está dirigido por los estudiantes, para los estudiantes.
“Ya existen muchas oportunidades para que los estudiantes brillen atlética y académicamente, pero el Pen Club de los Tigres se suma a eso porque les brinda a los niños creativos su propio lugar para brillar”, dijo.
El club se reúne cada dos jueves en la sala G205 para discutir temas, fechas de entrega y tomar decisiones. Los miembros deben asistir al menos a dos reuniones cada nueve semanas para mantenerse activos. La próxima reunión de Tiger's Pen será el jueves 14 de septiembre y se anima a los posibles miembros a asistir o enviar un correo electrónico a la Sra.
