CISD to Host Teacher from South Korea

Corsicana ISD Selected to Host Fulbright Scholars from South Korea

Twenty-eight English language teachers from South Korea have been awarded a competitive scholarship from Fulbright Korea and the Korean-American Educational Commission (KAEC). This Fulbright program, conducted by the Texas International Education Consortium (TIEC) and the Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP), begins on December 29, 2019 and runs through February 15, 2020.  The Fulbright Scholars will start the program in Austin with five weeks of professional learning with seminars on American Culture and Teaching Culture, Applied Teaching Techniques and Materials for English as a Second Language, American Public Education, School Site Residency Preparation, Public Speaking and Cultural Presentations.  For the culminating two weeks (February 1 - February 15), Fulbright Scholars will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in Corsicana, Texas and the Corsicana Independent School District (CISD) while studying American bilingual classrooms at Carroll Elementary School, Corsicana Middle School and Corsicana High School. In addition, the Fulbright Scholars will reside with willing community families, providing an immersive cultural exchange.

“This is our 19th year hosting the Korean Fulbright Scholars, and I wanted to share our wonderful community of Corsicana with our participants,” said Dr. Heather Farmakis, Chief Learning Officer at TIEC/TIEP. “This will be an enriching experience for all involved.”

“This experience will provide an engaging opportunity for both the Fulbright Scholars as well as for our CISD students and teachers to learn about different cultures,” said Dr. Diane Frost, Superintendent of Corsicana ISD. “Learning about different cultures of the world is an important part of understanding and preparing for the future.”

The Fulbright program provides the international English teachers the opportunity to learn about American society and culture, participate in English teaching method classes, and develop teaching skills to improve students’ English. Corsicana residents and families interested in being an American Homestay Host for the Korean Fulbrighters from February 1, 2020-February 15, 2020 should apply. The link with the application and more information can be found at www.cisd.org. There will be a stipend for selected Homestay Hosts, as well as selected CISD teacher mentors.
