Laura Serrano has built a reputation at Fannin Elementary for high-energy instruction and measurable student growth. Beginning next school year, she will bring that same approach to campus-wide leadership.

The Corsicana ISD Board of Trustees approved Serrano as assistant principal of Sam Houston Dual Language Elementary during its meeting on Monday. She will assume the role at the start of the 2026-’27 school year, succeeding Gina Geeslin, who is retiring at the end of the current school year.

Serrano, a fourth-grade English Language Arts and Reading teacher, has spent eight years in the classroom, the last four with Corsicana ISD. For her, the promotion is the fulfillment of a long-held plan.

"I've always had this goal to be a teacher for a few years, and then eventually move up to a position where I could help teachers and students," she said.

Serrano brings a lot to the table, Sam Houston Principal Krystal Chairez said.

"She's a great teacher, great educator, has a love for kids, and ultimately, that's what we want for Sam Houston and any campus."

“Growing our own talent in Corsicana ISD is important,” Superintendent Stephanie Howell said. “We believe in our staff and know they often have more to offer. Ms. Serrano has been a shining star for us in the classroom, and we believe she will make a meaningful impact in administration at Sam Houston as well.”

The appointment follows a period of sustained recognition for Serrano. She was named the 2026 Fannin Elementary Teacher of the Year. She earned a "Recognized" Teacher Incentive Allotment designation, a state benchmark identifying educators in the top tiers of effectiveness in Texas. She also represented Corsicana ISD at the Ron Clark Academy in 2024 in Atlanta.

Watching Serrano reach this milestone has been gratifying, Fannin Principal Holly Scoggins said.

"It's just proof that we build and pour into our teachers, to continue to grow, to help them succeed, and to see her grow in that light just makes me excited for her," Scoggins said.

Serrano will complete the current semester at Fannin before transitioning to Sam Houston this summer.

Laura Serrano se ha forjado una reputación en la Escuela Primaria Fannin gracias a su enseñanza dinámica y al crecimiento medible de sus estudiantes. A partir del próximo año escolar, aportará ese mismo enfoque a las labores de liderazgo en todo el plantel.

La Junta Directiva del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Corsicana (Corsicana ISD) aprobó el nombramiento de Serrano como subdirectora de la Escuela Primaria de Lenguaje Dual Sam Houston durante su reunión del lunes. Ella asumirá el cargo al inicio del año escolar 2026-2027, sucediendo a Gina Geeslin, quien se jubilará al finalizar el año escolar actual.

Serrano, maestra de Artes del Lenguaje Inglés y Lectura de cuarto grado, ha dedicado ocho años a la labor docente en el aula; los últimos cuatro, dentro del Corsicana ISD. Para ella, este ascenso representa la realización de un plan que había cultivado desde hace mucho tiempo.

"Siempre tuve la meta de ejercer como maestra durante algunos años para, con el tiempo, ascender a un puesto desde el cual pudiera brindar apoyo tanto a los maestros como a los estudiantes", comentó.

Serrano aporta un gran valor al equipo, afirmó Krystal Chairez, directora de la Escuela Sam Houston.

"Es una maestra excepcional, una gran educadora; siente un profundo amor por los niños y, en última instancia, eso es precisamente lo que buscamos para Sam Houston y para cualquier otro plantel escolar".

“Fomentar nuestro propio talento en el Corsicana ISD es importante», afirmó la superintendente Stephanie Howell. “Creemos en nuestro personal y sabemos que, a menudo, tienen mucho más que ofrecer. Este nombramiento se produce tras un periodo de reconocimientos continuos para Serrano. Fue designada "Maestra del Año 2026" de la Escuela Primaria Fannin. Asimismo, obtuvo la designación de "Reconocida" (Recognized) dentro del Programa de Asignación de Incentivos para Maestros (Teacher Incentive Allotment), un referente estatal que identifica a los educadores situados en los niveles más altos de eficacia en Texas. Además, en 2024, representó al Corsicana ISD en la Ron Clark Academy, ubicada en Atlanta.

Ver a Serrano alcanzar este hito ha sido sumamente gratificante, expresó Holly Scoggins, directora de la Escuela Fannin.

"Es la prueba fehaciente de que invertimos tiempo y esfuerzo en nuestros maestros para que continúen creciendo y logren el éxito; verla desarrollarse profesionalmente de esta manera me llena de alegría por ella", afirmó Scoggins.

Serrano completará el semestre actual en la Escuela Fannin antes de trasladarse a la Escuela Sam Houston este verano.
