Corsicana High School’s varsity fall tennis team has reached the state’s Top 16 and is now turning its focus to Thursday’s regional tournament in Prosper.
The Tigers earned their spot Tuesday in Ennis with a 10-4 regional semifinal win over Midlothian Heritage. They will play Frisco High School at 1 p.m. Thursday at Prosper Walnut Grove High School, with the winner advancing to Friday's match.
John Higgs and Ken Cloward anchor the boys’ team at No. 1 doubles, and Higgs is also expected to face strong competition in singles. At No. 2 doubles, Head Coach Chad White said that Gavin Morrison and Adler Psenicka have played awesome as a team during the postseason. Justino Abreu and Trace Yarger round out the boys' lineup at No. 3 doubles.
On the girls’ side, sisters Madison and Mckinley White form the Tigers’ top doubles pairing. At No. 2 doubles, Ashley Vargas and Kristell Silva have played very well in the playoffs, according to White, while Valeria Carrillo and Nariah Canto complete the lineup at No. 3 doubles. White also praised the new mixed doubles pairing of Gabe Johnson and Faith Owen, saying they have played great together and won three straight postseason matches.
“We believe we have some players that can compete,” White said. “John and Ken have had some big wins in doubles over Frisco High, Prosper, and several other strong teams. Madison and McKinley will also play to win in doubles. They are at the level where they can compete with any of the top teams.”
White said the Tigers are playing their best tennis of the season after a demanding year. The team scheduled a tough preseason and lost to several strong opponents, including two close matches in September.
“This team has had a lot of adversity. Coming off the success the previous teams have had, they had a lot of pressure on them,” White said. “We had a tough preseason and lost to a lot of good teams. To finish and play their best tennis in the playoffs is a great testament to their continuing to be resilient and coachable.”
