The echoes of loud drums, crashing cymbals, and jubilant Calicos and cheerleaders filled hallways across Corsicana ISD Friday as teachers were notified that they had won a big check, and the ideas they dreamed up for their students will become a reality, thanks to the Corsicana Education Foundation and its donors.
It was the CEF’s annual Grant Patrol, a time when high school cheerleaders, mascots and drumlines hop on a school bus to join education foundation board members and donors to deliver Innovative Teaching Grants to overjoyed educators.
CEF surprised district teachers Friday with over $44,000 in grants to fund creative learning experiences. This year, the 33 grants will fund innovative programs in agriculture education, fine arts, leadership, literacy, STEM, special education, and more.
Many exciting projects stood out to the board this year, such as “Empowering Student Authors” by Collins Intermediate School Library Media Specialist Heather McCutchen.
"I believe this project will create excitement around writing for our students,” she said in her grant application. “They will have the opportunity to become ‘published' authors, going through the entire process of drafting, editing, and creating a final product with illustrations and cover art. These stories will then be bound into physical books and given to the teachers for their classroom library or added to our school library collection for other students to check out and read."
Another notable innovative project was “Unlocking Literary Worlds,” in which English teachers will use the mystery novel “The Westing Game,” as a tool for learning through immersive storytelling.
The celebration marked over $1 million in total grants awarded to teachers since 2002.
“It is such a fun experience every year on Surprise Patrol Day,” said Casey Gordon, CEF Director. “It's a truly gratifying experience for our donors, witnessing the joy on the faces of the teachers and students as they receive their grants. They get to see that their money is truly making a difference here at CISD. Selecting the recipients is always a challenging task for our board, as we receive numerous innovative grant proposals each year, far more than we can fully fund.”
Funds for these grants are raised at the annual CEF gala through the live auction, Fund-A-Grant, or donations through the website, corsicanaef.org.

Los ecos de tambores fuertes, los címbalos sonando, Calicos y porristas alegres llenaron los pasillos de Corsicana ISD el viernes cuando se notificó a los maestros que habían ganado un gran cheque y que las ideas que idearon para sus estudiantes se convertirán en realidad, gracias a la Fundación de Educación de Corsicana y sus donantes.
Era la Patrulla de Subvenciones anual de la CEF, un momento en que las porristas, mascotas y tambores de la preparatoria se suben a un autobús escolar para unirse a los miembros de la junta directiva de la fundación educativa y a los donantes para entregar Subvenciones para Enseñanza Innovadora a educadores llenos de alegría.
CEF sorprendió a los maestros del distrito el viernes con más de $44,000 en subvenciones para financiar experiencias de aprendizaje creativo. Este año, las 33 subvenciones financiarán programas innovadores en educación agrícola, bellas artes, liderazgo, alfabetización, STEM, educación especial y más.
Este año, la junta directiva destacó muchos proyectos interesantes, como “Empowering Student Authors” (Empoderar a los estudiantes autores) de Heather McCutchen, especialista en medios de la biblioteca de la Escuela Intermedia Collins.
"Creo que este proyecto generará entusiasmo en torno a la escritura entre nuestros estudiantes", dijo en su solicitud de subvención. "Tendrán la oportunidad de convertirse en autores 'publicados', pasando por todo el proceso de redacción, edición y creación de un producto final con ilustraciones y portada. La celebración marcó más de $1 millón en subvenciones totales otorgadas a maestros desde 2002.
"Cada año, el Día de la Patrulla Sorpresa es una experiencia muy divertida", dijo Casey Gordon, Directora de CEF. “Es una experiencia realmente gratificante para nuestros donantes, ser testigos de la alegría en los rostros de los profesores y estudiantes al recibir sus becas. Pueden ver que su dinero realmente está marcando una diferencia aquí en CISD.
