    Physical Education Procedures and Policies

Welcome back to another exciting year in the gym at Bowie Elementary School!  I trust you had a great, restful summer and are ready to go again. We are looking forward to getting started.

In order to get things going smoothly from the beginning, I wanted to give you some information concerning our physical education rules and procedures:

    1)    The gym is a “safe shoe” zone. For safety purposes, we do not allow students to wear sandals, flip flops, backless shoes, heels, “crocs”, ballet shoes, slippers, or athletic cleats in the gym. Please send them to class wearing tennis shoes with shoestrings or velcro straps. Students will not be allowed to participate and points will be taken off their participation grade if they come to class wearing unsafe footwear. Check your child’s schedule to know when they are scheduled to come to physical education.

    2)    All clothing worn in the gym must meet the standard mode of dress as stated in the CISD Student Handbook. Shorts and skirts must be fingertip length. Girls who wear dresses to class are required to wear shorts underneath. Shirts should be long enough so that stomachs are not showing while involved in regular physical activity. If a question arises concerning clothing appropriateness, Ms. Usery will be making the final determination.

    3)    Requesting that your child be excused from physical education for illness or injury must be done in writing and brought to class. A note from home is required for each class day excused and is permitted for two consecutive days of class. You must send a new note each day.  If they bring a note excusing them from PE, they must sit out of recess for that day sas well.  Any student needing to miss three class days in a row must brinmg a doctor's note to be excused for the third day.  Once under a doctor's care, the student cannot be allowed back in class activities or recess without a doctor's written release stating that the student may return with no restrictions.  Send all doctor notes to the school nurse.

    4)    Fighting and bullying will not be tolerated and will be dealt with immediately!    Students who violate these class rules will have two points deducted from their grade. Those students sent to the office for any reason at any time will have their citizenship grade automatically dropped by a letter grade. All students will be given numeric grades each nine weeks based on the total number of points earned during the grading period. If there are any problems in class that I’m not aware of, your child will be instructed to make us aware of the situation before they leave the gym for the day. I can’t take care of problems I’m not aware of. If we are not informed, we will assume that it is not truly a problem that needs to be addressed.

I hope you find this information helpful in explaining our policies. If you have any questions or want to set up an appointment for a parent/teacher conference, please  call (903) 872-6541, or contact me through email at drobertstad@cisd.org..   My conference period on MWF is from 11:10 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., and on TTh from 8:45 a.m. - 9:35 a.m.

Thank you. We look forward to having a safe, fun year in the gym.
