A year after making the playoffs, the Tigers soccer team has a new coach and new district. Yet both look strikingly familiar.
Former Tiger player and coach Caleb Coy is back on the sidelines for the blue and gold, and he will lead his young charges into a new district that includes past league mates Ennis and Red Oak.
“I’m excited. The boys are, too,” said Coy, who coached the Tigers boys program for four seasons before taking two years off after the birth of his daughter. “It’s been a long off-season, going all the way back to summer workouts.
“We’re in a brand-new district, with some old foes like Red Oak and Ennis, but some new ones, too. It’s going to be a grind, but they’re hungry and ready to compete.”
The Tigers fell in the first round last year to now Class 6A Highland Park. It ended an 11-10-4 campaign. They have five starters back among eight returners total.
Senior goalkeeper Noah Taylor is back between the sticks, and junior Will Hernandez is the only returning starter on the back line. Seniors Damian Briones and Edgar Rodriguez will anchor the middle of the pitch, and senior Victor Santuario and junior Isaac “Chapo” Arredondo are the main goal threats going forward.
The Tigers have some exciting young prospects in sophomore forward Santiago Centeno and freshman forward Andre Ibanez, who both could both have breakout years, Coy said.
The Tigers start the season Jan. 5.
“I’m throwing them to the wolves early,” Coy said. “We head to the Temple Wildcat Kickoff Classic the first weekend in January. We play McNeil (Round Rock) on the 5th, Temple on the 6th, and Waco High on the 7th. It’s going to be a tough tournament, so we’ll see what we’re made of right away.”
