Jade Strother is no stranger to Corsicana. The Humble, Texas native was a standout volleyball and softball player at Navarro College, before finishing her college career at Angelo State.
The first year Corsicana High School head varsity volleyball coach said the life lessons she learned down the road at Navarro College influenced her decision to move back to town and inspired her to build a program centered on teamwork and togetherness.
“My time at Navarro was really amazing,” she said. “It felt like a family environment and the coaches made us eat, study and play together, so we bonded in that way.”
Strother, who majored in kinesiology, said she always wanted to be a coach. So, when the time came to look for jobs, Corsicana was the perfect fit to kick off her career.
“It felt like home, and I knew it would be easier to get through my first coaching job knowing the area and some of the people who live here,” she said.
Strother came to CISD three years ago, first as a junior varsity volleyball and softball coach, then as assistant volleyball and softball coach. But this year as head volleyball coach, she has made the team her own, and it has already gotten off to a promising start.
“I knew we were going to be good in the beginning,” she said. “But we hit some rough points. It wasn’t until the Eustace tournament that I saw a completely different team. Our energy was up, and it was the first time fans got to see what we are capable of. It made all our hard work worth it.”
So, what changed prior to the Lady Tigers’ two-win streak on Aug. 17 in Eustace?
“I put them through team building exercises to learn to work in unison,” Strother said. “I think going through hardship brought them closer together. They were playing as individuals before but now they have bought in and are playing as a team.”
Seniors Elaine Meyers and Carmen Brown are leading the squad that Strother predicts could finish in the top three or four in the district. It won’t be an easy road, as last year the Lady Tigers only beat Terrell in district play.
“We recently had a tough loss to Ennis, but I think if we bring our new energy and love for each other, we could beat them now,” she said.
After years of assessment Strother said she is now making the program her own.
“I wanted more structure,” she said. “I stress discipline and consistency.”
And now that Strother has invested in her players' lives, she believes she has earned their trust.
“They know I will be here for them, and they can come to me with anything,” she said.

Jade Strother no es una desconocida en Corsicana. La nativa de Humble, Texas, fue una destacada jugadora de voleibol y softbol en el Colegio Navarro, antes de terminar su carrera universitaria en Angelo State.
En su primer año en la Preparatoria Corsicana, la entrenadora de voleibol dijo que las lecciones de vida que aprendió en el Colegio Navarro influyeron en su decisión de regresar a la ciudad y la inspiraron a construir un programa centrado en el trabajo en equipo y la unión.
“Mi tiempo en Navarro fue realmente increíble”, dijo. “Se sentía como un ambiente familiar y los entrenadores nos hicieron comer, estudiar y jugar juntos, así que nos unimos de esa manera”.
Strother, que se especializó en kinesiología, dijo que siempre quiso ser entrenadora. Así que, cuando llegó el momento de buscar trabajo, Corsicana fue el lugar perfecto para comenzar su carrera.
“Me sentí como en casa, y sabía que sería más fácil sobrellevar mi primer trabajo como entrenadora conociendo el área y algunas de las personas que viven aquí”, dijo.
Strother llegó a CISD hace tres años, entrenadora del equipo junior varsity de voleibol y softball, luego como entrenador asistente de voleibol y sóftbol. Pero este año como entrenadora principal de voleibol, ha hecho suyo el equipo, y ya ha tenido un comienzo prometedor.
“Sabía que íbamos a ser buenos al principio”, dijo. “Pero llegamos a algunos puntos difíciles. No fue hasta el torneo Eustace que vi un equipo completamente diferente. Nuestra energía estaba alta, y fue la primera vez que los aficionados pudieron ver de lo que somos capaces. Hizo que todo nuestro arduo trabajo valiera la pena”.
Entonces, ¿qué cambió antes de la racha de dos victorias de las Lady Tigers el 17 de agosto en Eustace?
“Los sometí a ejercicios de formación de equipos para aprender a trabajar al unísono”, dijo Strother. “Creo que pasar por dificultades los acercó más. Antes jugaban individualmente, pero ahora se han convencido y juegan en equipo”.
Las estudiantes de último año Elaine Meyers y Carmen Brown lideran el equipo que Strother predice que podría terminar entre los tres o cuatro primeros en el distrito. No será un camino fácil, ya que el año pasado las Lady Tigers solo vencieron a Terrell en el juego de distrito.
“Recientemente tuvimos una dura derrota ante Ennis, pero creo que si aportamos nuestra nueva energía y amor mutuo, podríamos vencerlos ahora”, dijo.
Después de años de evaluación, Strother dijo que ahora está haciendo suyo el programa.
“Quería más estructura”, dijo. “Insisto en la disciplina y la consistencia”.
Y ahora que Strother ha invertido en la vida de sus jugadores, cree que se ha ganado su confianza.
“Saben que estaré aquí para ellos, y pueden acudir a mí con cualquier cosa”, afirma.
