• Classroom Rules

     

    Each student is expected to participate in class discussions on various law enforcement topics.  Please abide by the following rules:

    1. No cell phones or other electronic device, ear buds, head phones on or visible in class at any time without approval  If a cell phone is out during class it will be confiscated and turned over to your assigned Assistant Principal, to whom you will need to go see to get it back.

    2. Do not disrupt class and please refrain from blurting out or talking out while another student is talking.  Students will raise their hands if they have questions or comments. No profanity

    3. Pay attention – This means being awake, eyes forward and not talking to your neighbor.

    4. Show respect to fellow students and others in class.5.

    5. Cheating on tests and assignments will result in an automatic “F”.

       

      *Restroom: student are required to go to the restroom before class. Twenty minutes after the bell student may go at teahers dicretion*

    Attendance

    I expect you to attend the class.  

    (see Corsicana High Student Handbook.)

     

    Tardy

    A student is late and considered tardy if they are not in the classroom and in their seat when the bell rings.  Any student showing up for class 10 minutes after the bell has rung through the end of class is considered- Absent. (see Corsicana High Student Handbook.)  

     

    Substitutes

    Students are to respect them when they are teaching.  Failing to be polite and respectful to the substitutes MAY result in the student receiving a discipline referral.

     

    Spiral notebook

    A spiral notebook is required.  Use the book as it suits you. I expect you to use  it to take notes and for turning in  journal assignments. Also to mark important information for tests.  It is required to bring your spiral with you each day that you attend class.  

     

    Assignments/Test

    Assignments/Test are given a due date at the time they are handed out/taken. Put your name on all assignments, and please print it legibly. If work is unlegible it will be counted wrong or not excepted. I will not search for missing work turned in without a name. Deductions will be given and considered late once owner is determined.

    Late Assignments/Test are defined as it has been turned in after the time given was due.  Any assignment/Test turned in or taken after the due date without prior permission will have points deducted from the earned score. For extenuating circumstances, please contact me. *Students have


    2 days from the excused/ missed  date to turn in missed assignments or make corrections to failing Test score.* If a student is absent for a scheduled Test/ Exam the student has 2 days to take the Test/Exam.  Ten points will be deducted from grade after the second day.  ALL MAKE UP ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMS IS BASED ON EXCUSED ABSENCES ONLY.

     

    Grades

    Students will receive a letter grade based on their test scores, assignments, participation and attendance.  Students earn their own grade. The letter M will be given for missing assignments. A 0 will be given for assignments not turned in. Students cannot  make corrections  on any Test or assignment not turned in the initially.

     

    Grading Scale %

    100 – 90 = A 89 – 80 = B       79 -70 = C     69 – Below = F

     

     

     Citizenship

             All students start out with a citizenship grade of “E”.  Each time an offense occurs the citizenship grade will go down.

     

    Plagiarism/Copying is the presentation of work or ideas other than one’s own.   Any course work that is found to be plagiarized/copied will receive a grade of zero.

    Helping is not allowing someone to copy your answers. If caught COPYING major deductions from all involved will occur. A Zero is possible.

    Law Enforcement 1

     

    By the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the following:

     
    1. The student explores the history of law enforcement

    2. The student uses verbal and nonverbal communication skills necessary for law enforcement.

    3. The student uses critical-thinking skills independently and in teams.

    4. The student understands ethical behavior standards required for law enforcement personnel.

    5. The student explores the United States legal system and the requirements for law enforcement.

    6. The student analyzes custody and interrogation as they relate to the United States Supreme court decision in Miranda v. Arizona.

    7. The student analyzes procedural and substantive criminal law.

    8. The student analyzes law related to victims and witnesses.

    9. The student executes protocols and procedures protecting the rights of juvenile offenders and victims.

    10. The student recognizes the signs and symptoms of possible child and geriatric abuse and neglect.

    11. The student explains behavioral symptoms of drug users and dangers associated with handling drugs. The

    12. The student summarizes the philosophy and concepts that influence the development and implementation of a community-oriented police program.

    13. The student uses field note-taking and report-writing skills to complete police incident reports.

    14. The student analyzes reasonable suspicion and probable cause for motor vehicle traffic stops.

    15. The student employs procedures to protect, document, and process a crime scene.

     Law Enforcement 2
     

    By the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the following:


    (1) The student researches the history of correctional services.

    (2) The student recognizes professional standards and ethical responsibilities in the correctional facility.

    (3) The student uses verbal communication skills necessary for a correctional officer.

    (4) The student performs active listening skills to obtain and clarify information.

    (5) The student uses first aid, infection control, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a correctional facility.

    (6) The student recognizes constitutional laws and laws of correctional systems.

    (7) The student models behaviors during interactions with prisoners that demonstrate concern for individuals with disabilities.

    (8) The student uses conflict resolution skills and knowledge to resolve conflicts among individuals in correctional environments.

    (9) The student analyzes hostile situations and executes conflict management strategies to take charge of problems that arise in correctional settings.

    (10) The student applies technical skill procedures of correctional staff to effectively manage day-to-day operations of correctional facilities.

    Court System & Practice 
     
    By the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the following:
     
    1. The student examines the structure of the legal system in the United States.
    2. The student explores the roles and responsibilities of members of courtroom
    work groups.
    3. The student recognizes communication skills needed for courtroom policies and
    procedures.
    4. The student examines the steps by which a criminal charge is processed through
    pretrial, trial, adjudication, and the appellate stages.
    5. The student explains the structure and provisions of the United States
    Constitution and the Bill of Rights and how they impact the criminal trial process.
     
    Principles of Law 
     
     By the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the following:

    1. The student achieves academic knowledge and skills required for a career and postsecondary education opportunities associated with law, public safety, corrections, and security.

    2. The student uses communication skills in creating, expressing, and interpreting information and ideas, including technical terminology and information.

    3. The student formulates ideas, proposals, and solutions to address problems related to law, public safety, corrections, and security in order to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services.

    4. The student implements measures to maintain safe and healthful working conditions in a law and public safety environment.

    5. The student analyzes the legal responsibilities associated with roles and functions within law, public safety, corrections, and security organizations to demonstrate a commitment to professional and ethical behavior.

    6. The student recognizes the importance of interagency cooperation.

    7. The student understands the historical and philosophical development of criminal law.

    8. The student identifies the roles of the public safety professional.

    9. The student identifies the roles and functions of court systems.

    10. The student identifies the roles and functions of the correctional system.

    11. The student identifies the roles and functions of private security systems and agencies.

    12. The student identifies the roles and functions of fire protection services.
